The nation saw its gradual employment improvement continue last month when employers added 155,000 jobs to their payrolls to keep the jobless rate at 7.8 percent.

CNBC reports analysts had expected higher numbers, but most major industries showed little variance from their previous levels. December's jobs numbers almost fall exactly in line with the 153,000 per month average for the year. More details here.

Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate has remained stubbornly higher than the national average since the Great Recession. The latest data from the Georgia Department of Labor shows the area's unemployment rate dipped to 8 percent in November.

Layoffs by Georgia employers plunged nearly 42 percent in 2012 compared to 2011.
