Alice Byrne Elementary School in Yuma,Arizona adopted new school policies due to a student health issue regarding asthma on November 14, 2012.

The ?buddy system? is one of the new policies added. Every time a student asks to go to the nurse?s office he or she will have a ?buddy? assigned to go with them in order to prevent accidents on the way there. In addition to that, the nurse will make a school announcement when she will be leaving her office. As for the air quality, different colored flags are being flown to indicate the different levels at air quality. ?These policies are to ensure the safety of the students at the school.

Asthma in Arizona compared to previous years in quickly rising. Asthma in considered a chronic disease, effecting the lives of more than 600,000 Arizonians. Second hand smoking and air quality are the two major, potential causes for developing asthma. Between the years of 2008-2010 asthma in Arizona was higher among children than adults.8% of all school children have asthma. Which indicated, this situation may happen again but the way which it was dealt with can change.
