Educators, community organizers and health advocates gathered in Chicago Friday for a special training session on ways to prevent childhood obesity, a growing health problem in the United States and an increasingly important issue for American families.
The training was conducted by the Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC), one of the first U.S. organizations created to combat the disease. In CLOCC?s just ten-year history, childhood obesity has grown from a lesser-known issue to now a major American health challenge.
Since 1980, the obesity rate in American teenagers and children has nearly tripled, leading many health professionals to classify the growing problem as an ?epidemic.?
