Assailants attack Microsoft HQ in Athens

(AP) ? Assailants attacked the offices of Microsoft in Athens early Wednesday, driving a van through the front doors and setting off an incendiary device that burned the building entrance, police said.

There were no reports of injuries in the pre-dawn attack on the U.S. company's headquarters in the Greek capital, located in the Maroussi suburb north of the city center.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Authorities said no warning call had been made before the attack.

Greece has experienced attacks by several small armed anarchist or domestic terrorist groups for decades, which usually target official buildings, banks or symbols of state power with small bombs or incendiary devices. The attacks usually occur late at night and rarely cause injuries.

Police said initial information indicated three people had been inside the van. They forced the two security guards at the building to leave before they reversed the van into the front entrance, smashing the door.

The two security guards were giving testimony to police.

The assailants then triggered an incendiary device inside the van that police said appeared to have consisted of camping gas canisters and several containers of gasoline.

Police forensic teams examined the burned-out van, which was still outside the blackened entrance later Monday morning.

Although they have died down over the past year, attacks had spiked following the fatal police shooting of a teenager in Athens in December 2008 that led to widespread riots across the country.

One group that had appeared in the aftermath of the rioting had set itself apart by claiming responsibility for shooting dead an anti-terrorism police officer in central Athens in 2009 and a journalist in 2010.

In this May 23, 2012 file photo, holes made by the Honduran army to disable a clandestine airstrip used by drug traffickers are seen on the outskirts of Ahuas, La Mosquitia region, Honduras. A U.S. embassy spokesman in Honduras said on Sunday that a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent has shot and killed a suspected drug trafficker on Saturday June 23 during a raid in the area, the first time that a DEA agent has killed someone during an operation since the agency began deploying agents several years ago to accompany local law enforcement personnel on drug raids in Latin America. (AP) ? A U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent who killed a suspected drug trafficker during a raid in a remote region of Honduras was part of an aggressive new enforcement strategy that has sharply increased the interception of illegal drug flights.

The mission, called Operation Anvil, is run with six U.S. State Department helicopters, as well as a special team of DEA agents who work with Honduran police to move more quickly and pursue suspicious flights, according to a U.S. official in Honduras who couldn't be named for security reasons.

In little more than two months since the operation started, it has intercepted four flights. That compares to only seven from mid-2010 to the end of 2011 ? less than one every two months.

The U.S. official said about 100 flights of suspicious origin come into Honduras every year.

With the new operation, Honduran and U.S. drug agents follow every flight they detect of unknown origin and work with non-U.S. contract pilots who don't have the restrictive rules of engagement that the U.S. military do.

The area of Burs Laguna, where the DEA says an agent shot a drug suspect as he was reaching for his gun Saturday, is part of the remote Mosquito region that is dotted with clandestine airstrips and a vast network of rivers for carrying drugs to the coast.

Saturday's incident marked the first time that a DEA agent has killed someone in Central America since the agency began deploying specially trained agents several years ago to accompany local law enforcement personnel on all types of drug raids throughout the region, said DEA spokeswoman Dawn Deaden.

A May 11 raid by Honduran police with DEA advisers, also under Operation Anvil, killed four people and wounded four others, whom locals said were innocent civilians traveling the river at night. Honduran and DEA officials have said people on the boat fired first and the lawmen were acting in self-defense. The DEA said none of its agents fired their guns in that incident.

Operation Anvil also netted cocaine shipments on May 6 in the Mosquito and June 13 in Olancho state, totaling more three quarters of a ton of cocaine in about two months.

The weekend raid was a "great example of positive U.S.-Honduran cooperation," said U.S. Embassy spokesman Stephen Plosive in Tegucigalpa.

But the aggressive tactics have come under fire from human rights groups and some political interests in Washington, especially since the May 11 attack.

The Committee of Relatives of the Disappeared in Honduras filed a complaint in May with the regional prosecutor in the Gracias a Dios region where the attack occurred, claiming human rights violations by Honduran and U.S. authorities. The group's investigation concluded that the dead and wounded were innocent civilians.

American University anthropology professor Adrienne Pine sent a letter signed by 40 Honduran scholars and former government officials, and supported by 300 academics in 29 countries, to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton earlier this month, demanding the U.S. cease support for the Honduran military and police.

"It's really troubling," Pine said Sunday. "It's absolutely not appropriate for U.S. law enforcement to be killing other people in other countries."

Operation Anvil is part of an overall increase in U.S. efforts in Honduras, where drug trafficking and murder rates have spiked in the last year or so. With 82 murders per 100,000 people, the U.N. lists Honduras as the most dangerous country in the world. Its national police force is rife with corruption, with some calling it one of country's main organized crime operations.

Since international crackdowns on drug trafficking began in Mexico and the Caribbean, Central America has become the crossing point for 84 percent of all U.S.-bound cocaine, according to Joint Task Force-Bravo, a U.S. military installation in Comayagua, Honduras.

Air and sea shipments of cocaine to Honduras have risen dramatically since 2006, when less than 10 percent of the U.S.-bound cocaine went through the country then. By 2011 the portion had jumped to more than 30 percent. Honduras has been the main landing point for such drug flights from South America since 2009.

The U.S. is increasing its DEA personnel in Tegucigalpa from four to seven, the U.S. official said. Another eight to 10 agents are stationed in the north as part of the Foreign-deployed Advisory Support Teams, known as FAST, to train Hondurans and work on the State Department helicopters. The U.S. also recently established a full Narcotics Affairs Section in the embassy for the first time and is seeking its first extradition of an accused Honduran drug lord, Carlos Arnold Lobo, under a constitutional amendment passed by Honduras in January allowing its nationals to be extradited to the U.S.

The U.S. Embassy could not immediately say how much more is being spent in Honduras as a result, as a lot of the funds come from the Central America Regional Security Initiative, about $100 million a year for efforts across the region. The State helicopters, for example, are officially allocated to Guatemala even though they're now working in Honduras.

U.S. officials, including with the DEA, have done background checks and have trained 42 Honduran national police to work on drug-trafficking cases alongside DEA agents and U.S. military at Joint Task Force-Bravo.

Until April, the DEA and Hondurans had relied mainly on Joint Task Force-Bravo helicopters to chase illicit flights. But because of the rules of engagement for the U.S. military in Honduras, they could only fire back to protect themselves and their equipment, and not to protect the DEA or Honduran police who can come under fire in the field.

"These helicopters are different in that they're not U.S. pilots and they have the ability to fire in self-defense and in the protection of ground elements, where JTF Bravo, they're limited in rules of engagement," the U.S. official said.

The weekend's operation occurred around 12:30 a.m., when a U.S. agent and Honduran National Police arrested four suspects and seized 792 pounds (360 kilograms) of cocaine, Plosive said. He said six other people were arrested later on suspicion of aiding the smuggling operation.

The incident took place about 12 miles (20 kilometers) away from Hausa, the site of the May 11 shooting, according to Hausa mayor Lucia Baquedano. No one from the town was involved, Baquedano said, adding that at least 11 clandestine airstrips sit between Ahuas and Brus Laguna.

The operation was similar to the May 11 raid, according to another U.S. official who wasn't authorized to speak on the record. The previous operation involved four helicopters, two in the air and two that landed, and included Guatemalan contract pilots and Honduran police and military, with the DEA working as advisors.

People in the helicopters tracking the flight early Saturday saw about 40 people transporting drugs from the plane, the official said. They were intercepted by law enforcement about a half mile from the landing strip, where the seizure, arrests and shooting took place. Most of the 40 people scattered.

The DEA said it would not release the name of the agent who killed the suspect.

"During the operation, a fifth suspect attempted to engage the police team with a firearm and was shot by a DEA agent in self-defense," Posivak said. "The suspect subsequently died at the scene. There were no other injuries or fatalities."

Ministry of Security spokesman Ivan Mejia said Sunday that that the Honduran government has sent police, a judge, a prosecutor and medical examiners to the scene to investigate.

Investigations also continue into the May 11 Ahuas shooting, with confusion remaining about what actually happened.

Rather than just letting developers respond, Apple should fix App Store reviews for everyone

Getting what you want and getting what you need are two very different things. Time and time again Apple has shown that rather than providing faster horses they'd rather create cars. Instead of opening up multitasking in iOS, they'd rather provide APIs so people can listen to Pandora, use TomTom, and make Skype calls. Apple isn't always right, but for anyone whose ever had to problem-solve user-facing issues knows, Apple typically takes the right approach. That's why I don't think we'll see App Store developers gain the ability to respond to App Store reviews.

How Gen Y Scores Jobs With Social Search

Michele Cuthbert is the Principal of Baker Creative, a brand architectural firm that practices a holistic branding approach which encompasses marketing, business, HR, public relations, social media and new media. Follow her on Twitter @BakerCreative or read the team?s blog.

In an era when 50% of recent college graduates are unemployed or underemployed, according to government data analyzed by the Associated Press, the U.S. tech industry shines brightly in a dreary hiring climate. ??According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, technology has shown a relatively steady increase in jobs created since June 2009. ??

As a generation, millennials have an advantage when it comes searching online for job opportunities.?

?I definitely think that my generation is more technologically dexterous, so we have the advantage in using social media,? explains Francesca Krihely, an online community manager from San Francisco. ?I also think that we are in positions of power for defining the rules and regulations to some degree. The tactics we use now are going to influence how people use social media in the future.?

Know Where to Go

?One of the best ways to reach find out about these opportunities is via social media. But, knowing where and when to find these openings is the key to successful job searches.

Alexa Lindsay of promotional campaigns company ePrize says that learning to wade through the glut of information available online was one of the most challenging aspects of conducting a social media-centered job search.

?Searches have become so easy,? says Lindsay. ?All you have to do is type in a few words, and more than a thousand websites come up. If you rearrange the order of those words, a different set of websites come up. While technology has been a blessing?by making it easier to search for jobs, companies and opportunities all over the globe, it also requires you to weed through to find what you are really looking for.?

All of the effort seems to be worth it for those who endure. According to an infographic by CareerEnlightenment.com, one in five employers use social networking sites to research job candidates. Nearly two-thirds of organizations say they have hired new talent through social media, and 56% of HR professionals search for potential candidates using networking websites. And in 2010, 92% of hiring companies planned to use social networking to recruit new talent. LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter ? in that order ? were the primary places hiring professionals would be looking for their next hire.

Unsurprisingly, LinkedIn remains the place to see and be seen online among professionals. All participants in this article admitted to using the online professional network more than any other social media platform during their job search.

College grad Zach Holdren says LinkedIn has been key while searching for jobs in the tech sector: ?LinkedIn.com has been my best asset for learning the most valuable information about companies I?m targeting. Twitter follows by a close second.?

Know Who to Connect With

?James Purdy, a recent hire at UIEvolution ? a mobile, tablet, TV and automotive applications development company in Kirkland, Wash. ? decided to look for a new job when his new interests waned from the direction of his day job.

??On some occasions I would even come home for lunch to work on my iOS project. I didn?t feel the same intensity with my work projects, which made the work week less personally rewarding,? Purdy says in his blog, MyiPhoneAdventure.com. ??I suppose one might say I was suffering from the-grass-is-always-greener-on-the-other-side-of-the-fence syndrome, but it looked so green in the neighboring field, and I couldn?t look away.??

Purdy utilized both traditional and social media job search techniques when doing his search, and he came across the listing for his current UIEvolution position on Craigslist. To demonstrate that he possessed the skills needed for the job, Purdy made a YouTube video showing his most recent project, a nearly completed iPad app.

About a week later, Purdy heard from several companies and had several interviews, ultimately resulting in a job offer.

?Social media is the ideal avenue to connect with candidates for tech opportunities. Francesca Krihely was offered a position at 10gen, the company behind open source NoSQL database system MongoDB, after connecting with key decision makers from the company via Twitter. ?

??I had heard about and been following 10gen for quite some time on Tumblr, Facebook and Twitter, so naturally I started following two executives ? the two most public-facing people in the company,? says Krihely. ?I also followed the company?s LinkedIn group and saw how the popularity and legitimacy of MongoDB had grown. After months of lurking on the sidelines, I started re-tweeting Meghan and @mongodb?s tweets in hopes of getting their attention.?

Her tactic worked, and after five months of searching, Krihely landed a position as a community manager for the company.

Both Lindsay and Krihely recommend you ?watch what you tweet.?

?Job seekers should avoid creating an online presence they would not want their future boss to see,? Lindsay says. ?If you are using social media to check out companies, they are doing the same for you.?

Babies acquire binocular vision by looking around, study says

Does depth perception develop in humans as a result of nature or nurture?

It's a question scientists have wondered about. And a new study comes to a surprising conclusion: Babies acquire binocular vision as a result of viewing the world around them, not merely thanks to genetic programming.

"My guess was that it was going to be something in between nature and nurture," said study leader Ilona Kovacs, a psychologist at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in Hungary. Instead, it appeared that nurture ? the environmental stimulation a baby received ? was the key.

The finding, reported this week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, extends scientists' knowledge about just how much the visual system in the brain relies on what we see and when we see it. It may also lead to new tests for visual dysfunction early in life.

Vision is a widely used model for studying brain development. One of its advantages is that, unlike sound, visual input does not reach an infant in the womb. That allows scientists to be sure that a newborn's visual system is unadulterated.

Binocularity is a particularly attractive characteristic of the visual system to study because, in normal babies, it comes on suddenly a dependable three to four months after birth. This gives scientists a clear milestone to observe.

A growing body of research has shown that early life experiences play a crucial role in the development of normal brain function. In the visual system in particular, a "critical period" takes place during infancy in which the part of the brain that processes what we see becomes highly plastic. During that time, infants are particularly vulnerable to developing visual deficits, like "lazy eye," if their vision is disrupted by congenital cataracts or an eye injury. If problems are not fixed during the critical period, they often remain for life.

Because early life is so important for brain development, studying babies is key. The trick for scientists, however, is coming up with a way to test their ideas. Normal infants all develop on about the same timeline, making it difficult to compare two different groups.

Kovacs and her colleagues got around this problem by comparing the brain activity of two groups of healthy babies: Some were born prematurely and others were born at full term. This allowed the scientists to explore whether development of binocular vision depended on the amount of time the babies were out of the womb, or on the amount of time they had been developing since conception. The nature side of the equation was presumed to be about the same for both groups.

During the experiment, 30 newborn babies viewed a screen with a pattern of dots that changed in a way that only people with binocular vision could detect. To tell whether they noticed the change, the scientists measured the babies' brain activity with electrodes that were connected to their heads. The babies were tested about once a month until their binocular vision kicked in.

The study design may have been clever, but it was also difficult to carry out. Finding healthy preterm infants is a tough proposition, so the study took more than six years.

But when the data were in, the results were clear: Postnatal age determined when binocular vision arrived, with both groups of babies developing it about four months after birth.

And when the researchers showed the babies a flashing checkerboard ? a widely used test of basic vision function ? the responses of the two groups diverged. That suggests the role of visual experience is specific to complex visual functions, like binocular vision.

Kovacs' results may have clinical applications as well. She believes her test could be used as a screening tool for early life vision disturbances that cause a failure of depth perception, like severe amblyopia, raising the possibility that such problems could be fixed if detected early enough.

Takao Hensch, an expert in the biology of early brain development at Harvard Medical School who was not involved in the study, said the research provides a rare glimpse into how early experiences can change our brains for life.

"It's an unusual opportunity to observe in humans what might happen during these critical developmental milestones," he said. "And since you know the first photons are hitting the visual system at birth, it's a very clever, very clean experiment where you can look at the effects of experience starting from nothing."

London 2012 has 'sustainability in its DNA' says IOC

London 2012 will be the first Olympic Games to measure its carbon footprint over the entire project term and the first to commit to a zero waste to landfill target according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Launching its new 'Sustainability through Sport' agenda this week, the IOC said sustainability considerations have increasingly become an integral part of Olympic Games preparations with London 2012 having sustainability in its DNA.

Major London 2012 achievements, they claim, include the creation of the Olympic Park; the largest new urban parkland created in Europe for 150 years, and the construction of the most sustainable Olympic stadium in history; completed on time, on budget and to high sustainability standards.

The IOC's 'Sustainability through Sport' agenda is a 103-page commitment to the promotion of a positive environmental legacy from the Olympic Games to all host cities and countries.

On London 2012 itself, the IOC reports that although initial plans to generate 20% of all venues' energy from renewable sources have not proved possible, a 50% reduction in emissions will be delivered via a range of low-carbon measures.

These include efficient building design with significant cement substitutions being used. In addition, 50% of all construction materials have been delivered to the Olympic Park by sustainable transport while 90% of all cooling systems will be free of hydro-fluorocarbons.

It's also claimed that London 2012 is on track to reuse and recycle 90% of all materials generated by demolition prior to building the Olympic Park, through the diverting of construction waste from landfill to reuse, recycling and recovery.

Warren Mayor Jim Fouts: State passes down unfunded mandate on fireworks

Michigan residents will be in store for a Fourth of July unlike any previous.

Thanks to the Michigan Legislature's misguided 2011 decision to allow Ohio-style major fireworks such as Roman candles and heavy duty fire crackers, Michigan residents now face major dangers.

The act restricts local communities from protecting their residents from the hazards and nuisance fireworks may cause. This decision reverses decades of state laws designed to protect children from being maimed by explosive devices, pets from unwanted noise, seniors from sleep disruption and deprivation, and homes from flash fires brought on by wayward fireworks.

The state gains a licensing fee of $600-$1,000 and 6 percent tax from fireworks sold, while cities get the honor of enforcement without any financial gain.

Warren, like many cities, will have an increased cost of overtime for police and fire. And we will not be able to retrieve any of the fines imposed by those who commit an illegal fireworks act.

Thus, while the state expects the city to confiscate illegal fireworks, we will receive no enforcement dollars, since enforcement is under the state's civil infraction law. The state gets all money from a fine while the city can only charge for the cost of storage.

Financial enforcement is the state's gain. Physical confiscation is left to the city. Furthermore, the state usurps the right of the city to enforce existing laws dealing with fireworks on the day before July 4 and the day following.

I have received numerous complaints from Warren residents about this potential disaster in the making, as well as the continual onslaught of fireworks noise into the wee hours of the morning. The July 4th fireworks have already begun.

Warren resident Maria Pillitson has complained about the overloading of fireworks for the last two to three weeks. Chris Milewski wants existing fireworks laws enforced. A few years ago, Milewski's neighbor landed fireworks on his roof. He is concerned about his fireworks-addicted neighbor, who might cost him his home or, at a minimum, his roof.

Former White Lake Township Fire Chief Samuel Leonard Shepard, now a Warren resident, is very concerned about potential fires caused by these new very powerful fireworks. Angela Ditch is concerned about dangers posed to her property by these powerful fireworks.

How many more garage fires will there be? How many more children will have their fingers, hands and other limbs blown off by fireworks?

The Fireworks Safety Act of 2011 is costly both to cities and to the safety of all state residents.

Jim Fouts is the mayor of Warren.

'Girl Thing' science?video: Not a good thing

This version of the controversial "Science: It's a Girl Thing" video was posted to YouTube after the European Commission's original version was rendered inaccessible.

By Alan Boyle

Doing smackdowns on stupid online videos could be a full-time job, so it's a good thing that so many other people are willing to take on the task. What's not a good thing is the video done up for the European Commission's Women in Research and Innovation initiative, which has high-heeled models glamming it up to tout science as a "girl thing."

Not that I'm against high-heeled models, but as a teaser to highlight women in science or get girls interested in science careers, it earns a strong thumbs-down. After weathering the bad reviews on the Web and Twitter for hours and hours, the European Commission shut down access to the video and tweeted, "OK, scientists, we heard you."

The campaign in general isn't a bad thing. This quote from the Science-Girl-Thing.eu website hits the right tone:

"Want to save lives? Keen to find out what?s lurking in the nether regions of space, or in the deepest ocean trench? Passionate about the environment? Do something about it! The next great discovery could be yours, so come and take up the challenge.

"Did you know that girls do as well as boys in science and maths at school but many more boys go on to further study science, technology and engineering? So girls, remember: you?ve got what it takes.

"Science needs your ideas, your inspiration and your passion ? science needs YOU!"

It's just too bad that one video spoils the mood. Now I'm waiting for the parody video, "Science: It's a Guy Thing," which will have Chippendale male dancers strut their stuff while a bespectacled woman looks up from the microscope.

For a selection of the smackdowns, just sort through the Twitter tweets that include the #sciencegirlthing tag?? or, as a balancer, the #realwomenofscience tag. Both of those tags have risen to Twitter's list of top trenders. ?This Skepchick posting by my blogging colleague, Noisy Astronomer Nicole Gugliucci, provides a great survey of the pluses and the minuses. She includes this video that covers the positive side of the ledger. Like the awful teaser video, it's part of the "Science: It's a Girl Thing" video gallery.

This "Science: It's a Girl Thing" video focuses on University of Liege astronomer Yael Naz?.

Update for 2:15 p.m. ET: The tweets from European Commission spokesman Michael Jennings suggest that he thinks the campaign's evil plan is working: "Hope was to get young people onto site. That seems to be happening! ... Lots of comments on #sciencegirlthing vid. 45 seconds of fun for launch to grab attention. Not central to main campaign."

Update for 5:45 p.m. ET: The original teaser video has been taken down, but of course you can still find an archived version on YouTube. The Science-Girl-Thing.eu website features a different teaser trailer, and the European Commission's communication department says this in a Twitter update: "OK, scientists, we've heard you and we want to keep hearing you. Help us build a list of #realwomeninscience: https://t.co/A2LX24ym." That shortened Web address points to a list of Twitter accounts for female scientists. More than 100 women are on the list so far, and it's growing by the minute. Now, that's a good thing.

Update for 7:05 p.m. ET: Twitterers are tittering over tweets with the #scienceboything hashtag, but I'm still waiting for the "Science: It's a Guy Thing" video.

Suicide attackers hit Afghan hotel; hostages taken

(AP) ? Three suicide bombers attacked a lakeside hotel north of Kabul, taking hostages and staging an hours-long gunbattle with Afghan security forces, police said Friday.

The bombers, armed with machines guns, rocket-propelled grenades and vests laden with explosives, attacked the Spozhmai hotel at Qargha Lake around 11 p.m. Thursday night and fighting continued Friday morning, said Mohammad Zahir, criminal director for Kabul police.

Eighteen people, including women and children, have been rescued from the hotel and two of the attackers are dead, said Gen. Kadam Shah Shayem, a commander with the Afghan National Army in Kabul.

Kabul police chief Mohammad Ayub Salangi said at least one policeman was killed in the attack.

Four guests jumped out of a window at the two-story hotel and crouched in the lake to hide from the attackers, Shayem said.

"Our forces have surrounded the area," Shayem said. "There is still shooting. We are being very careful because there still are people ? civilians ? inside the hotel."

There were civilian casualties, but details were not immediately available.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said they attacked the hotel because foreigners there were drinking and participating in other activities banned by Islam.

The U.S.-led coalition was supporting Afghan security forces who responded to the attack, the coalition said. An Associated Press photographer at the scene said coalition helicopters were circling over the site.

'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter': The Reviews Are In!

Critics says Benjamin Walker brings 'backbone' to an otherwise 'fake and cartoony' retelling of the Civil War.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Erin Wasson and Benjamin Walker in "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter"
Photo:

"Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" reimagines the Civil War as a struggle between the living and the undead with our 16th president as a slayer of the bloodsuckers. It sounds like a fun premise, but critics certainly wish the filmmakers had stuck to the history books.

Here is our roundup of what the critics are saying about "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter."

The Story
"The story opens with young Abe witnessing the murder of his mother by a vampire. He swears vengeance, and some years later is lucky to be getting drunk while standing at a bar next to Henry Sturgess (Dominic Cooper), who coaches him on vampire-killing and explains that it is a high calling, requiring great dedication and avoiding distractions like marriage. Against Henry's advice, Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) marries Mary Todd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and the story moves quickly to his days in the White House, where he discovers that the vampires are fighting on the side of the South." — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Benjamin Walker
"He lucked out big time nabbing Benjamin Walker to play Lincoln from 8 to 80 (not exactly, but you get my point). Walker, 30, was a dick-swinging smash on Broadway in the 2010 musical 'Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson,' playing Old Hickory as a genocidal horror in sexy pants. Walker brings backbone and flashes of humor to the guy on the five-dollar bill." — Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

The Direction
"To stand a chance of pulling this off on film, you need wit and a deft touch, and, boy, is Timur Bekmambetov the wrong man for the job. (Tim Burton, who produced, would have been the better choice.) The director came out of Russia some years back with a pair of showy fantasy thrillers, 'Night Watch' and 'Day Watch,' and has since made the Angelina Jolie shoot-em-up 'Wanted.' Bekmambetov's filmmaking style manages to be both frantic and ponderous, and he has the humor of a nightclub bouncer." — Ty Burr, The Boston Globe

The Script
"Adapting his own richly embroidered novel, which is a lot more fun than the movie, Seth Grahame-Smith (who also wrote 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies') strips his book for parts and ditches the most interesting cockamamie detail and context." — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

The Final Word
"Unfortunately, director Timur Bekmambetov and writer Seth Grahame-Smith, adapting his own best-selling novel, take this concept entirely too seriously. What ideally might have been playful and knowing is instead uptight and dreary, with a visual scheme that's so fake and cartoony, it depletes the film of any sense of danger." — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press

Get Fit With Kayleigh and Herbalife : Rabbit Food For My Bunny Teeth

Right after I launched my blog in March, my friend Kayleigh emailed me and shared a story about her health and struggles with her weight. Kayleigh has always been fit and healthy, but a couple of years ago struggled with a failing thyroid and adrenal glands which led to a 30lb weight gain. She was eating healthy and still exercising, and did not understand why she was gaining weight so rapidly. After finding out the root of her problem, she started looking for a way to get back on track. Instead of getting discouraged, Kayleigh turned to Herbalife as a solution to feel better and get back to her regular weight. After starting to use Herbalife shakes in her daily routine, she saw the weight melt off and noticed how much better she physically felt. She loved the results so much that she still uses Herbalife today to maintain her weight, and has become a distributor to help others feel great too!

I thought that sharing Kayleigh?s story and solution was appropriate, because I am struggling with some health issues as well. I have been feeling particularly off lately and have noticed severe changes in my mood and energy, as well as physical changes with my skin, hair, and weight. I went to my doctor and through a round of blood tests discovered that a precursor to my thyroid is elevated. My sister has Graves disease and had her thyroid removed due to its overactivity, and the process of her diagnose was long and very stressful. It may take some time to get everything figured out and leveled, but?I am so glad that I have my sister and Kayleigh who have both overcome their health hiccups.?Like Kayleigh, I know how awful it is to be on your A game, and not see any results and just feel crappy overall. Our health has a huge impact in the way we feel, and I know I am not the only one who is dealing with these issues. I love that Kayleigh found a way to feel better and get back to her healthy self with Herbalife, and am so inspired by her positive attitude and story. I hope that Kayleigh?s story can help other?s who are struggling with health issues and are not feeling their absolute best.

I adore Kayleigh because she is honest with her health and weight struggles and always wants to help others to feel and be the best they possibly can. When I was frustrated with my weight back in April, Kayleigh sent me some samples of Herbalife to try. She was so excited to share Herbalife with me since it made such a positive impact on her health and weight loss. She is such a sincere and honest girl and wants everyone to reach their health & fitness goals whether it be with Herbalife or another regimen.

I know that like everything else in life, weight loss is not one size fits all. What works for me may not be what works for everyone else, but I want to inspire others to make healthier choices and provide motivation for others to reach their goals. This is exactly why I wanted to share Kayleigh?s story with you guys. Maybe you don?t have the time to make the meals I make every single day, and need something else to replace meals that fits into your daily routine. Or maybe you have the motivation, but need another option to help you lose weight or get healthy. I think that Herbalife is a great option for someone who is on the go and needs a portable option that still has excellent nutritional value.

I tried the chocolate and vanilla shakes, and was pleasantly surprised. Most nutritional/weight loss shakes taste like same watery fake flavors, but Herbalife did not. My favorite was the chocolate. It actually tasted like a malt from a diner! I mixed my shake with unsweetened almond milk, which gave it a super thick and creamy texture that I absolutely loved. I really enjoyed the natural cocoa flavor, but more than that, I loved how full it kept me until dinner. Call me crazy, but I would throw in some coffee and make it a protein mocha for breakfast! I just told Kayleigh that I want to order a tub of Chocolate Herbalife Nutritional Shake Mix. This is a great post workout shake for busy days when I am short on time. I can?t wait to make some chocolate Protein Pancakes too!

I asked Kayleigh a few questions to give you guys a glimpse inside her HerbaLIFE!

1. Why did you start using Herbalife?
I was struggling with weight gain from a failing thyroid and adrenal gland and my regular healthy lifestyle wasn?t working the way it used to. I needed a jumpstart

2. How did you hear Herbalife?
I actually heard about it on the radio. I listen to Dr. Laura obsessively and she is does advertisements for Herbalife. After she had multiple coworkers loose upwards of 40 pounds using the shake, I decided I had to give it a try.

3. How long have you been using Herbalife?
I have been using it on and off for the past 9 months.

4. How many Herbalife shakes do you have per day? What do you usually eat in a day?
I vary between one and two shakes a day. It depends on how quickly you want to loose the weight. For the quickest easiest results its two shakes a day, but sometimes it doesn?t fit it my schedule or I don?t feel like eating two shakes.

Breakfast:
I almost always have a shake (the green one of my blog). That shake is a banana, Herbalife Forumla 1 Weight Loss Chocolate Powder, chia seeds, spinach, and a scoop of peanut butter.

Lunch:
I?ll normally make something. Maybe a big salad with all my favorites, a soup, a sandwich, a wrap or even leftovers. Pretty much anything that I can scrounge up quickly on my way to work or the night before if I have time. When I do have time I love to try new recipes and check out different ideas ? I love RFFMBT for that. It has given me some wonderful lunches that have kept me full till dinner time!

Dinner:
This is normally when I will have the second shake. I work out at night so this is my post workout shake. Either I?ll make the same shake I made in the morning (but nix the chia seeds ? they give you a ton of energy that have the potential of keeping you up later than you want to be up) or I?ll get a juice (Naked Juice Superfood is great or if you have a juicer that is awesome also) and mix it in with my Herbalife Formula 1 Vanilla flavored shake with some Glutacor to help with muscle re-growth.

Snacks:
I generally pack and bring with me wherever I am going that day. I?ll bring veggies, fruit and a protein. Everything varies based on the day but for proteins I either bring a bag of mixed nuts or an Herbalife Snack Bar (the lemon one is my favorite) I suggest getting creative with your fruits and veggies. You can eat as many as you want a day because they are just great for your system and you are supposed to have 8 servings a day anyhow so mix and match and use the veggies fill up if your having a mid meal craving or need for a munch fest!

5. How is Herbalife different from other nutrition/diet shakes?
I find that other shakes are either extremely expensive to purchase, not very good tasting, or had to work into your daily life. For me Herbalife is simple. It tastes delicious, it works wonderfully and I can add it to pretty much anything. I go and buy single small bottles of Naked Superfood Juice in bulk and then will bring it with me for the day if I?m out and about. It?s easy to shake up and drink. It doesn?t need a blender, it doesn?t need its own can. Got a craving for something sweet? Throw the chocolate flavored one in milk and drink up and you have a full meal of chocolate milk that will keep you full and energized all morning or afternoon! Its so simple and their are so many options and flavors.

6. How do you make your shake?
Depends on what kind of time I have. I?ll make the chocolate one with milk or water if I?m in a hurry. Or the vanilla with natural juice. When I?m home and I have my Magic Bullet Blender I will blend with ice and other yummy mix-ins. Sometimes fruits and veggies, sometimes peanut butter. Depends on my mood and day of the week, but your options are endless.

7. What is your favorite shake flavor?
Well, I love the chocolate because it fills my sweet tooth, but the vanilla is wonderful for adding to anything. Can I say there is a tie?

8. What is the average price of Herbalife? Where can I get it?
The price of the Formula 1 shake with shipping and handling and tax comes out to just a little over $48. It varies slightly on where it is being shipped to. Depending on the supplements you add, or if you want a workout protein powder as well (Herbalife 24 which is also great) those things vary. You can find all that information as well as the full catalog on my Herbalife sales page.

If you?re interested in Herbalife, or want to connect with Kayleigh, you can follow her Twitter, Tumblr blog, and purchase Herbalife from her sales page!

Jack Osbourne's MS: After the Diagnosis | Health Magazine

Mario Anzuoni / Reuters

Jack Osbourne, 26, announced he has multiple?sclerosis, an incurable autoimmune disease that attacks the central nervous system.?He was diagnosed just two weeks after the birth of his daughter, Pearl Clementine.

Osbourne, who is the son of rocker couple Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, told People magazine: ?I was just angry and frustrated and kept thinking, ?Why now?? I?ve got a family and that?s what?s supposed to be the most important thing.?

(MORE: Brain Food: Berries Can Slow Cognitive Decline)

About 400,000 people in the U.S. are living with MS and about 200 people are diagnosed each week, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The disease causes the body?s immune system to attack myelin, the substance that sheaths the nerve fibers of the central nervous system. When any part of the myelin sheath or nerve fiber is damaged or destroyed, signals traveling to and from the brain and spinal cord are interrupted, which causes a variety of symptoms ? from numbness in the limbs to paralysis or loss of vision.

The hallmark of MS is its unpredictability, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe and presenting differently in individual patients.

We spoke with Dr. Timothy Coetzee, chief research officer of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and Dr.?Rosalind Kalb, vice president of the group?s Professional Resource Center, about Osbourne?s diagnosis, why the disease is so difficult to diagnose and predict, and what it means to be young with MS.

(MORE:?Study: Cognitive Decline Sets In as Early as Age 45)

Why is diagnosing MS so challenging?

Coetzee:?There?s no test a physician can do to find out if you?re at risk for MS. There?s no cholesterol test, no biomarkers. You diagnose by excluding other things in terms of neurological symptoms. For example, in Jack?s case, he had difficulty seeing. [Osbourne told People he was diagnosed after having lost 60% of his vision in his right eye.] If you were in a similar situation, your ophthalmologist?will not directly say, ?You have MS.? You will be referred to a neurologist to see if something else is going on. Jack, for example, said he started experiencing tingling. All of these are indicators that something neurological is happening. The best way to lead to a confirmation is undergoing an MRI. They use a chemical to see if there is damage and white marks in certain areas of the brain. This combined with other symptoms leads to a diagnosis. Sometimes physicians will still wait another six months to see if things change. It?s a process, and we are trying to accelerate it.

What makes the disease so unpredictable and how does that affect patients?

Coetzee: In Jack?s case, he started experiencing visual problems, but it?s not certain what each person will experience. Everyone is different. The variation in symptoms reflects the different parts of the brain that are under attack. For some people, it?s the part of the brain that deals with movement and they have trouble walking, others have vision problems and others have very mild tingling. The brain is so complex and we don?t know what part the immune cells will attack. It?s unfortunately a question we don?t know the answer to at this point.

Kalb:?You may have a reaction and then things go back to normal, or you may have to deal with things not going back to how they used to be, and you need to problem solve. Typically, after a diagnosis, people start thinking about what they have to do and who needs to know. What do they do about their work situation? It?s unpredictable. You spend your whole life putting together an image of yourself based on all the things that make you uniquely you. When a doctor says you have MS, it?s like another piece you need to fit into your picture and it?s hard to predict.?When some people hear the news, they can lose it for a little bit, some people kind of close off and don?t want to believe it. Some learn to slowly deal with the information and see how it will fit into their lives and this can greatly help.

Most people are diagnosed with MS between the ages 20 to 50. Osbourne is young at 26. What?s the prognosis for someone with early-onset MS?

Coetzee: The good news is, someone young like Jack has a lot of options available in terms of treatment options. There are several disease-modifying therapies he can try. The focus of these are to alter the disease and to stop the immune system from attacking the brain, as well as altering where the immune system cells attack. There?s the phrase, ?paying it forward? and that?s essentially what they do. By stopping the attack, the brain and its functions are preserved for the future. We didn?t have this 20 years ago.

Jack is also said to be a very active young man, very energetic and fit. This will have a beneficial effect in the present and will also make a difference in the future. There are many therapies and approaches that can help movement symptoms.

Everyone is different, but most people like Jack who are diagnosed at a young age can lead very happy and productive lives. They may have some, but very little disability going forward. That?s what data tells us. Overall, individuals can look forward to happy futures even with this diagnosis. It?s a different world being diagnosed today than 30 years ago.

What?s the first step for someone recently diagnosed with MS? How can they move forward and be successful?

Coetzee: Maintain a strong relationship with your physician to help manage and monitor the disease. We can?t predict the future, but there are many treatment strategies. Be sure to take advantage of all the options and plan for the future by keeping these options open.

Kalb:?People need to deal with the emotions that come with MS first. Some need to do this on their own or with family and friends. For other people, it?s helpful to sit down with a third party like a helpline or a therapist. It can help to think out loud and process those feelings.?I want people to recognize that finding a professional to talk about their feelings with and laying out the next steps is a sign of strength, not a sign of weakness. People can help you get through this in the best possible way. You?re not alone.

Football?s Meyer and Richardson stop by for Indians game

CLEVELAND ? Browns running back Trent Richardson?s baseball career ended in the ninth grade. He picked track and weight lifting in the spring.

Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer?s time on the diamond stopped after two years in the Braves? minor league system. It wasn?t his decision. He attempted a comeback, but it ended with a failed tryout and sent him to football.

Two of Ohio?s favorite ? and newest ? football figures revisited their baseball dreams Monday before the Indians-Reds game at Progressive Field.

?I used to come here all the time,? Meyer, 47, said. He grew up in Ashtabula and named Duane Kuiper and Rick Manning as two of his favorite Indians.

Monday was Meyer?s day at the ballpark. He was joined by his 13-year-old son, Nate ? it was really more his day ? and was followed around by a Sports Illustrated writer.

But when he showed up in the outfield under threatening skies, he was greeted by Richardson playing catch with Cleveland left fielder Shelley Duncan. Richardson was one of the ones that got away from Meyer when he was Florida?s coach. Richardson grew up in Pensacola and attended the same high school as Emmitt Smith, a Gators legend.

?I got to know Trent real well,? Meyer said. ?He?s obviously a great football player.
?I wish we would?ve got him. I?m glad he?s with Cleveland now. Because I?m a big Browns fan, too.?

Richardson turned in the leather for a pigskin and played catch with reliever Joe Smith, who dropped down to his familiar sidearm slot a couple of times. Richardson showed off a little, snaring a high throw with his left hand like it was nothing.

Meyer didn?t pick up the football. He played catch with Nate in the outfield ? the former shortstop and the current one. Then they hung out in the clubhouse before taking turns in the indoor batting cage.

Nate, who was wearing his new Indians uniform, showed some skills using Damon?s bat. Then Dad stepped into the right-handed batter?s box and wasn?t bad himself.

As Nate finished a second round, Meyer marveled at All-Star shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera hitting rockets just feet away. Meyer once thought he would be in that spot.

?When the draft came around, I got a phone call from the Indians and they invited me to the Pewter Mug, I think it was called,? he said. ?Gabe Paul took me down to shortstop and said, ?Maybe someday you?ll play shortstop for the Indians.?

?They were supposed to draft me, said they were going to draft me. I was hoping the Indians would take me.?

Meyer, who was taken in the 13th round by Atlanta, wore gray shorts and a scarlet Ohio State golf shirt Monday. The details of his contract had been revealed earlier in the day.

He will make a minimum of $4 million a year through 2017, with the potential for much more in bonuses. The university included more specific language regarding what he should do if he becomes aware of any possible NCAA violations. Predecessor Jim Tressel was forced to resign after not reporting potential violations.

?I really don?t look at the contract,? Meyer said. ?I had my attorney look at it. We talked through it and I?m OK with it.?

Richardson?s contract is also a newsworthy subject. He and quarterback Brandon Weeden, a fellow first-round pick, are the only Browns? rookies unsigned. Richardson was the No. 3 overall pick and is waiting for Nos. 1 and 2 ? quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III ? to set the market.

?I think it?s about done. Just gotta wait on the big boys,? said Richardson, who bought a house in Columbia Station. ?I?m ready to get it done. I just want to play football.?

Richardson?s Monday tour of Cleveland sports began with a visit to Browns headquarters from Cavaliers Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson. The recent rookies spoke to the new rookies.

?It was real good,? Richardson said. ?They talked about fans, how to embrace the city, stay out of the way of the girls all the time, stay out of the limelight. Talk to people like you want to be talked to.

?It was a good conversation. I liked those guys. They?re big inspirations, models of how to do it coming in as a rookie.?

Richardson said his swings in the cage went pretty well.

?It?s been a long time since I was hitting,? he said. ?It gets you tired more than I thought you?d get.?

Meyer?s day at the ballpark wasn?t over after batting practice. Donning his own pristine white Indians jersey, he and Nate threw dual ceremonial first pitches. They were simultaneous strikes.
