West Indies team and players move up on ICC rankings ? Cricket News Update
After beating the World No. 1 ranked T20 side Sri Lanka in the World T20 final, to clinch their maiden WT20 champ title, the West Indies cricket team as well the players moved up on ICC T20I Rankings released yesterday.
The Caribbean side moved five places up to second on the Reliance ICC Team rankings table, just behind Sri Lanka, who have retained their No. 1 spot with 127 rating points, despite losing the World T20 final to the former on Sunday. Mahendra Singh Dhoni?s India stand No. 3 on the table, trailing the Caribbean unit by just one rating point. 2010 World T20 champions England are ranked No. 4 while perennial chokers South Africa are the fifth best, despite choking again in the recently concluded T20 showdown.
Jamaican middle-order batsman Marlon Samuels and mystery spinner Sunil Narine both climbed 20 places in the latest Reliance ICC T20 player rankings for batsmen and bowlers respectively, to reach their career best rankings. Samuels, who was adjudged as the Player of the Match for his whirlwind 78 in the WT20 final, on Sunday, is currently rabked 18th in the batting rankings. He also leapt seven places to ninth in the all-rounders? rankings with 229 rating points. He shares the all-rounders? ranking with Sri Lanka?s Angelo Mathews, who has also 229 points.
Swashbuckling left-handed opener Chris Gayle surpassed Player of the tournament, Shane Watson of Australia on the batting rankings, to reach second place, just behind New Zealand?s Brendon McCullum, whom Gayle trails by 20 rating points. Watson has dropped to third spot on batting rankings, however he is still leading the all-rounders? chart.
Three other West Indies batsmen who moved up on rankings include Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard and captain Darren Sammy. The only Windies player who dropped on ICC rankings is opener Johnson Charles, who fell by nine places to 40.
Sunil Narine, who starred with the ball for West Indies in the final against hosts (3 for 9), moved 20 places up on Reliance ICC T20 bowlers? rankings to share 13th spot with Bangladesh?s Shakib Al Hasan, with a career best rating of 638. Narine?s fellow spinner Samuel Badree moved a staggering 46 places to reach 47th spot on bowlers rankings table.
