'Super' PACs set to disclose big donors Tuesday (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Get ready to find out who the millionaires are behind this year's presidential election.

Shadowy outside groups funded by anonymous donors and working on behalf of candidates they support have pummeled Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and others for the past two months by spending millions of dollars on mostly negative TV ads that have had an enormous impact on the fight for the Republican presidential nomination.

Now, for the first time since they started shaping this campaign in earnest, many of those "super" political action committees are set to disclose just who is financing their pseudo-campaign operations. Many took advantage of a change in federal rules that essentially let them shield their donors' identities until after key primary elections in January. But they still must submit their financial reports to the Federal Election Commission by Tuesday.

Only a handful of donors are known, including Las Vegas billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson. His two checks for $5 million apiece to Winning Our Future, a pro-Gingrich group, essentially kept the former House speaker's White House campaign afloat at critical junctures just before the South Carolina and Florida primaries.

Bain Capital executives and Romney friends have lined the bank accounts of the pro-Romney group Restore Our Future. Former Bain executive Edward Conrad donated $1 million last spring and Marriott International Inc. CEO J.W. Marriott Jr. gave the group $500,000, seed money spent to successfully hammer Gingrich in Iowa late last year as he started to rise.

That's when the super PACs sprang into action in full force.

Since then, groups working on behalf of Republican candidates for president have spent roughly $25 million in TV ads, most of which have been negative, in the first four states to vote in the GOP nomination battle ? Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida.

Of that, the pro-Romney Restore Our Future has spent about $14 million on ads, mostly to take down Gingrich in Iowa and Florida. That's more than the roughly $12 million Romney himself has spent on TV ads.

The super PACs have also unleashed millions on expenses typically reserved for campaigns, including direct mailings, phone calls and get-out-the-vote efforts.

It's a precursor to the general election, when super PACs aligned with both Republicans and President Barack Obama are planning to dole out even larger sums.

These groups are the products of a 2010 Supreme Court ruling that stripped away old restrictions on corporate and union spending in federal elections. They can't directly coordinate with the candidates they support, but many are staffed with former campaign workers who have an intimate knowledge of their favored candidate's strategy.

Some donors will never be known because some super PACs have established not-for-profit arms that can shield contributors' identities. Those arms can spend more than roughly half of their money on so-called advocacy, although campaign-finance reformers have urged the Internal Revenue Service to reduce that share.

Super PACs like American Crossroads ? backed by George W. Bush political adviser Karl Rove ? and its own nonprofit arm played a significant role in the 2010 midterm elections, helping deliver the House to the GOP and boost the number of Republicans in the Senate.

Tuesday's filings to the FEC won't just reveal many of the committees' financial backers; they'll also show how their money is being spent, particularly on infrastructure, payroll and travel. The same will be true in the campaign financial filings for President Barack Obama, Romney, Gingrich and others, who last released their finances in October 2011.

But, above all, the FEC filings are likely to show the awesome impact super PACs have in supplementing expansive, national campaigns.

Super PACs have become headaches for campaign-finance watchdogs, who have long warned of a potentially corruptive influence that hasn't been seen since the days of Watergate.

But some GOP-leaning groups say their ads contribute to a marketplace of ideas and counterbalance the huge sums of cash that Obama and the Democratic National Committee plan to spend on the president's re-election bid.

By law, presidential campaigns can raise, at most, $5,000 total from an individual donor.

But super PACs can solicit and spend unlimited money ? and some employ affiliated groups, known as 501(c)4 organizations, whose donors are allowed to remain anonymous. Watchdog groups like Democracy 21 have complained to federal regulators on that front, asking the IRS to limit how much those nonprofit groups can spend on political advocacy.

5 films getting buzz at the Sundance Film Festival

Founded by actor Robert Redford (and named for his character in the 1969 film "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"), Sundance Film Festival is still the biggest American festival for independent film and is held every year in Park City and other Utah venues. Some movies have gotten buzz there, then failed to cross over at the box office or awards shows, but many films seen at Sundance have proven to be the next big hits ? some have even been nominated for the Best Picture Oscar (like Sundance favorites "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Precious"). The festival also traditionally has strong documentary offerings, by first-time and veteran filmmakers. Here are five documentaries from the festival that already have critics and audiences raving.

- Molly Driscoll

The documentary directed by Victoria Bruce and Karin Hayes examines corporations which are not paying taxes, a circumstance they believe that has the tacit approval of the government.

Occupy Oakland: Police Teargas Protestors, Use Flash Grenades

OAKLAND, Calif. ? Oakland police used tear gas and "flash" grenades Saturday to break up hundreds of Occupy protesters after some demonstrators started throwing rocks and flares at officers and tearing down fencing.

Three officers were hurt and 19 people were arrested, the Oakland Police Department said in a release. No details on the officers' injuries were released.

Police said the group started assembling at a downtown plaza Saturday morning, with demonstrators threatening to take over the vacant Henry Kaiser Convention Center. The group then marched through the streets, disrupting traffic.

The crowd grew as the day wore on, with afternoon estimates ranging from about 1,000 to 2,000 people.

The protesters walked to the vacant convention center, where some started tearing down perimeter fencing and "destroying construction equipment" shortly before 3 p.m., the release said.

Police said they issued a dispersal order and used smoke and tear gas after some protesters pelted them with bottles, rocks, burning flares and other objects.

Most of the arrests were made when protesters ignored orders to leave and assaulted officers, the release said. By 4 p.m., the bulk of the crowd had left the convention center and headed back downtown.

The demonstration comes after Occupy protesters said earlier this week that they planned to move into a vacant building and turn it into a social center and political hub. They also threatened to try to shut down the port, occupy the airport and take over City Hall.

In a statement Friday, Oakland City Administrator Deanna Santana said the city would not be "bullied by threats of violence or illegal activity."

Interim police Chief Howard Jordan also warned that officers would arrest those carrying out illegal actions.

Oakland officials said Friday that since the Occupy Oakland encampment was first established in late October, police have arrested about 300 people.

The national Occupy Wall Street movement, which denounces corporate excess and economic inequality, began in New York City in the fall but has been largely dormant lately.

Oakland, New York and Los Angeles were among the cities with the largest and most vocal Occupy protests early on. The demonstrations ebbed after those cities used force to move out hundreds of demonstrators who had set up tent cities.

In Oakland, the police department received heavy criticism for using force to break up earlier protests. Among the critics was the mayor, who said she wasn't briefed on the department's plans. Earlier this month, a court-appointed monitor submitted a report to a federal judge that included "serious concerns" about the department's handling of the Occupy protests.

Sonnen earns his rematch against Silva, grinds out win over Bisping at UFC on Fox 2

CHICAGO -- It was a rough 15 minutes, but Chael Sonnen did enough to get the fight he's coveted for 17 months.

The middleweight title contender locked up a shot against UFC 185-pound champ Anderson Silva with a surprisingly tough win over Michael Bisping. In a fight, that appeared to be a toss-up for some, Sonnen took a unanimous decision, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28, in the co-main event of the UFC on Fox 2 card at the United Center.

Sonnen's win sets up an intriguing scenario.

UFC president Dana White guaranteed the winner of tonight's tilt a shot at Silva. The champ has been sidelined since August and the promotion is pointing towards a summer return. But Silva recently hinted that he may be out beyond the summer.

Sonnen has done everything he can to call out the champ. Tonight, he made the wise decision of not poking Silva. Instead, he delivered a hilarious speech talking about his own greatness.

He was good, not great tonight, but much of that had to do with the opponent. Bisping rubs plenty of fans and media members the wrong way and, as a result, he's a bit underrated. The common thought was that the Brit would get eaten alive by Sonnen's Olympic level wrestling, but that didn't happen in the first two rounds.

Sonnen scored two takedowns in the first, but Bisping got to his feet in less than 25 seconds on both occasions. He also stuffed three other takedown attempts. In the second, Sonnen scored a takedown with 2:58 left. Bisping was up a minute later and took minimal damage. The Brit was effective in the striking game, landing a few good combinations, but nothing really rocked the hard-charging American.

Joe Rogan was convinced Bisping had won the first two rounds. That wasn't the case on the judges' scorecard, but two of them did have things 19-19. Sonnen did what he needed to in the final round. He scored a big takedown and really dominated the position for over three minutes.

Sonnen scored that takedown just 12 seconds into the round. Bisping defended well for the next minute but got a little impatient as he was just about to rise to his feet. Bisping gave us back standing and Sonnen squashed him. Then he did a brilliant job of getting both hooks in and rolling to dominant position on the ground. He worked to lock on a rear-naked, but it didn't happen. Bisping was protecting from the choke, lost his focus and allowed Sonnen to roll the position into the mount with 2:31 left. With 1:31 left, Bisping hip escaped to full guard. Bisping eventually got to his feet with less than 20 seconds left and scored a takedown of his own. He even landed a few big elbows, but it was too little, too late.

Now the question is when will the fight everyone wants - Sonnen vs. Silva - actually go down. Sonnen turned up the heat in recent weeks, plainly stating that he'll never get to fight Silva because the champ won't accept the fight.

"I'm not going to fight Anderson either way. They can say whatever they want. Anderson is never going to do that fight," Sonnen told "The MMA Insiders" show on Las Vegas' ESPN1100/98.9 FM. "I hope he's healthy and has a good life, but I'm not buying into this mythical world that Anderson is going to some day sign a contract to fight me."

Silva beat Sonnen at UFC 117 via fifth-round submission, but that was after getting dominated for 23 minutes. He's had to hear about it ever since. This is a chance to shut Sonnen's mouth and likely do it in front of a record-sized crowd in Brazil. Why would he pass on the opportunity?

Wild homes of the future that are on the market now

We may not have flying cars yet, but a new residential construction project going up in Sunny Isles Beach, Fla., may make you think otherwise.

The Porsche Design Tower will feature an elevator to lift owners ? and their cars ? to their front doors in seconds. A co-production of developer Dezer Properties and Porsche Design Group, the retail-oriented spin-off company of the luxury German carmaker, it will be the first residential project affiliated with the Porsche name. These car-friendly condos will range from $2.9 million to $9 million.

?You will drive into the building, onto the elevator ramp, shut the ignition off and be magically whisked to the front door of your apartment in 45 seconds to a minute and 15 seconds depending on what floor you?re on,? explains Gil Dezer, president of Dezer Properties. The elevator will cover all 57 floors and include technology that automatically identifies the car and the unit owner once both are on board.

Forbes.com slideshow: See some futuristic homes that are for sale

It?s just one example of how modern design aesthetics have coupled with technology to birth innovative, cutting-edge homes that not so long ago would have been reserved only for the sets of films like "Minority Report" (or TV shows like "The Jetsons").

We rounded up a selection of futuristic abodes that challenge traditional McMansion layouts. Some are relatively new homes designed with green living in mind while others are the decades-old brick and mortar visions of celebrated artists. Realtor.com, Zillow.com, Coldwell Banker Previews International, Sotheby?s International Realty and others helped us sort through listings to handpick the sleekest, most avant-garde, in some cases zaniest, homes on the market. They conjure images of science fiction lore, and in many cases, have actually been rented out by movie and television studios for that express reason.

Perhaps not surprisingly, many architecturally famous homes fall into this category. For example, the Gantert Residence, also known as ?Case Study House #22,? graces our list. Constructed in the early 1980s, it was the last Pierre Koenig house constructed while the architect was still alive. The $2.3 million Los Angeles residence with its boxy upper floors and cantilevered base gives the impression of a residence floating, appearing ?as a giant Cubist sculpture from Hollywood Boulevard,? according to its listing.

California has many ultra-modern abodes up for grabs, particularly in Southern California. ?The trend in real estate right now is demand for contemporary homes,? says Chad Rogers, a real estate agent with Hilton & Hyland in L.A. (and formerly one of the stars on Bravo?s TV show "Million Dollar Listing"), noting that many of the most modern-looking structures tend to be "smart homes," fitted to be energy efficient, as well. ?People want easy living and these properties afford that: clean lines and open space so you can move about your house without having to go through a bunch of rooms.?

Rogers, who has listed a smattering of futuristic properties including a $9.5 million Malibu eco-estate, currently represents a $10 million Hollywood Hills mansion forged of steel, glass and concrete. The 10,000-square foot structure was built originally as an art gallery with live-in space. In addition to the stone display-ready walls, it boasts a home theater, a pool and 12-person spa, a koi pond and a detached guesthouse. The kitchen is comprised almost entirely of stainless steel, designed by Porsche Design Group.

?These concrete and steel properties are the most expensive type of architecture to build,? says Rogers, noting that foreign investors have shown much buying interest in ultra-modern estates. ?To duplicate a property like this you?re looking at a minimum of $1,500 per square foot to do it.?

Constructing architecturally outrageous homes can rack up costs. Take the Pottery House in Santa Fe, N.M. Originally the brainchild of Frank Lloyd Wright, the adobe dwelling?s construction was resuscitated in the 1980s by a developer eager to complete the project that had been designed by the famed late architect but never finished (the original owner had passed away). The builder reportedly ran out of money mid-construction and with no buyer in sight, the bank assumed ownership. Eventually the current owners bought the foreclosed estate, which is now listed for $4.75 million, and finished it.

The Pottery House?s design hinges on concentric circles. About 24,000 adobe bricks make up the structure and Scandinavian ship builders were actually brought in to craft the ceiling. ?It has a sort of mystique. Prior to listing, this house seemed more like a local rumor,? says David Fries, an associate broker with Santa Fe Properties and the listing agent for the Pottery House. It had remained quietly tucked away behind multiple gates in an anonymous subdivision. ?Even if someone could get their hands on the address, it no longer really relates to where it?s located since no one could really find the place without directions and gate codes.?

Fries and Rogers both think their listings will ultimately sell to affluent buyers who collect art or at least appreciate architecture as an art form. Some of the homes on our list will require buyers to appreciate geometry as well. A $19.5 million Vermilion, Ohio, spread called the Waterwood Estate is comprised of a series of triangular and rectangular buildings parsed together along the shore of Lake Erie. In Crystal Bay, Nev., a $43 million Dr. Seuss-esque house touts walls of glass, a glass elevator, a six-story glass stairwell and hidden garden rooms, all suspended off the edge of a promontory.

US Embassy: US citizen kidnapped in Nigeria freed

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? A U.S. citizen kidnapped by gunmen in Nigeria's oil-rich southern delta has been freed after a week in captivity, the U.S. Embassy said.

U.S. Embassy spokeswoman Deb MacLean told The Associated Press on Friday that the man had been released after being kidnapped in Warri in Delta state on Jan. 20. MacLean declined to offer any other details, citing privacy rules. Delta state police spokesman Charles Muka said he had not been informed about the man's release, as his company refused to cooperate with local authorities.

The freed hostage was identified as William Gregory Ock, 50, of Bowdon, Georgia, by his sister, Dee Dee Patterson.

Patterson told the AP on Friday that the family had no details of his release.

"The only thing we know is that he is safe and he is in a secure location," Patterson said by telephone.

She had no information on when Ock would return home to Georgia.

It was not immediately clear whether a ransom had been paid to secure his release, though many companies working in the region carry kidnap insurance and simply pay a negotiated price to see their employees freed. Kidnappers had made contact with authorities previously and demanded a $333,000 ransom.

The attack Jan. 20 occurred outside a bank branch in Warri, one of the main cities in nation's Niger Delta, a region of mangroves and swamps where foreign oil companies pump 2.4 million barrels of crude oil a day. The gunmen attacked Ock as he came outside, shooting his police escort to death before abducting him, Muka said.

Investigators believe the gunmen trailed him for some time before the attack, Muka said.

Foreign firms have pumped oil out of the delta for more than 50 years. Despite the billions flowing into Nigeria's government, many in the delta remain desperately poor, living in polluted waters without access to proper medical care, education or work.

In 2006, militants started a wave of attacks targeting foreign oil companies, including bombing their pipelines, kidnapping their workers and fighting with security forces. That violence waned in 2009 with a government-sponsored amnesty program promising ex-fighters monthly payments and job training. However, few in the delta have seen the promised benefits and criminal gangs still roam the region, increasingly targeting middle-class Nigerians.

In 2011, there were five reported kidnappings of U.S. citizens in Nigeria, according to a recent U.S. State Department travel warning about the country. The most recent occurred in November when two U.S. citizens and a Mexican were kidnapped from a Chevron Corp. offshore oil field and held for about two weeks, the State Department said.

A German working in the city of Kano in north Nigeria was abducted Thursday by unknown gunmen, authorities have said.

Paul braves snowy Maine in hunt for GOP delegates

BANGOR, Maine (AP) ? Presidential hopeful Ron Paul wants other Republicans to know that he and his supporters plan to hang around for a while longer.

The Texas congressman is on a two-day campaign swing through Maine, which holds caucuses starting Feb. 4.

Paul addressed a packed town hall meeting in Bangor on Friday and said he was braving the snowy weather to pick up delegates.

He is skipping Tuesday's presidential primary in Florida to focus on caucus states like Maine. Such states helped Barack Obama accumulate enough delegates to win the Democratic nomination in 2008.

Maine will award 24 delegates this year, compared to 12 four years ago.

Paul placed a weak fourth in South Carolina's primary last Saturday.

Newer radiation therapy technology improves patients' quality of life, research finds

ScienceDaily (Jan. 26, 2012) ? Patients with head and neck cancers who have been treated with newer, more sophisticated radiation therapy technology enjoy a better quality of life than those treated with older radiation therapy equipment, a study by UC Davis researchers has found.

The findings, presented Jan. 26 at the Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Symposium in Phoenix, is the first of its kind to measure long-term quality of life among cancer patients who have undergone radiation therapy for advanced cancers of the throat, tongue, vocal cords, and other structures in the head and neck.

Allen Chen, assistant professor and director of the residency and fellowship training program in the UC Davis Department of Radiation Oncology, reported that the use of intensity-modulated radiation therapy, or IMRT, was associated with fewer long-term side effects, which led to a better quality of life. Standard radiation therapy to the head and neck has been known to affect a patient's ability to produce saliva, taste, and even chew food. These side effects historically have resulted in permanent disabilities.

"With the newer machines using IMRT, physicians are skillfully able to deliver higher doses of radiation to the tumor and lower doses to surrounding normal tissues than ever before," Chen said. "I wanted to see if this theoretical advantage resulted in any tangible improvements in quality of life for patients."

For the study, Chen used the University of Washington Quality of Life instrument, a standardized, previously validated questionnaire that patients complete after radiation therapy. The survey was administered prospectively to 155 patients at UC Davis Cancer Center diagnosed with head and neck cancers, 54 percent of whom were initially treated with IMRT and 46 percent of whom were treated with other radiation therapy technologies. All of the patients receiving IMRT also underwent image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), which has been available at UC Davis since 2006 and is used to increase accuracy by taking a high-quality scan of the tumor daily.

Chen and his colleagues found that the early gains observed in quality of life became magnified over time for those who received IMRT treatment. For example, one year after treatment, 51 percent of the IMRT patients rated their quality of life as very good or outstanding, compared to 41 percent of non-IMRT patients. But two years after treatment, the percentages changed to 73 percent and 49 percent respectively.

John Torres of Sacramento was diagnosed in early 2010 with a large tumor at the base of his tongue on the right side of his throat. Fearing that surgery might result in the loss of his voice box, Torres opted for IMRT with IGRT and had 33 treatments.

Torres, now 73 and in remission, points out that the treatments were "no walk in the park," but said he is faring much better than he expected. Although his mouth is often dry and he has lost some taste sensation, he is enjoying an active life.

"I golf a couple of time a week," he said. "My wife and I like to socialize. We go out, and we dance. And we are planning to take a cruise through the Panama Canal in next two or three months. Life has gotten back to pretty much exactly what it was."

Chen acknowledged that quality of life is difficult to measure because of its subjective nature. Nonetheless, he said the findings support the more widespread use of IMRT in radiation clinics throughout the country.

"There has been some reluctance to utilize it because it is expensive, resource intensive, and takes on average 10 to 12 hours to prepare a single patient's treatment," he said. "I think this is further evidence that our investment in developing newer technologies is really paying off."

Chen, whose findings will be highlighted at a symposium press briefing on Friday, Jan. 27, received no outside funding for the research. Other investigators who collaborated on the study were Gregory Farwell, Quang Luu, Esther Vazquez, Derick Lau, and James Purdy, all from the UC Davis Cancer Center.

The Wii U officially arriving by this Christmas

Nintendo of America

By Matthew Hawkins

Nintendo, which fired the first official shot of the upcoming console war at E3 last summer, just let loose another bombshell.

Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo, has announced that their follow-up to the Wii, the Wii U, will be available in the United States by the oh-so-important year-end holiday shopping season.?Reuters also reports that other key markets will get the new home system around the same time as well, including Europe, Australia and Japan.

No exact date has been specified, but if Nintendo follows the same pattern that has been established by their previous hardware's debut (the GameCube, the original DS, the Wii, the DSi), it should arrive just a few days or week before Black Friday 2012. Parents, you've been warned.

Thus far, not much else is known, including a final retail price, let alone Nintendo's selection of launch titles. But the fact that it's definitely coming out by year's end is a lot more to chew on when compared to the other guys.

Details regarding Microsoft and Sony's upcoming systems are still virtually nonexistent, at least officially so. Rumor mills for both camps, on the other hand, have been busy; the most interesting recent tidbit regarding the "Xbox 720," as it has been dubbed, is courtesy of Kotaku.

First off, it may adopt Blu-ray discs, which is a format that's proprietary to Sony (and their current console, the PlayStation 3 to be exact), and also have some kind of built-in scheme that prevents the operation of used games. Both sound fairly outlandish and flat-out crazy, for entirely different reasons.

But stranger things are happened, and as with everything, rumors are a sign of the times. Which in Microsoft's case is how DVDs will no longer be a viable option for delivering physical games (it's barely cutting it as is, in some instances), plus how a purely digital distribution platform may not be entirely in the cards as of yet.

Along with the fear of used game sales, and how it has affected everyone's bottom lines, not just Microsoft's. As for the PS4, nothing notable has been said as of late. Though it's a safe bet either one of the two, or perhaps both, will be officially unveiled at this year's E3, partially as a response to the pending arrival of the Wii U.

Review: Dylan's "Freedom" offers eclectic mix of songs (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? If the Oscar nominations didn't give artistic purists enough reasons to howl this week, there was the release of Miley Cyrus' music video for her version of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make You Lonesome When You Go," which arguably elicited even more banshee-like shrieking throughout the land than "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" being put up for best picture.

Cyrus' recording is but one of 76 songs on the longest version of a new charity compilation set, "Chimes of Freedom - The Songs of Bob Dylan (Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International)." You won't have a more entertaining experience this year - either by reading through the sometimes eyebrow-raising track list, or actually slogging through the whole five-and-a-half-hour affair.

Joan Baez and the artist formerly known as Hannah, on the same disc? Ke$ha and Pete Seeger. together again? Maroon 5 and Billy Bragg, brethren in protest-song revival? There should be a Grammy category for best achievement in cojones, created just for this collection's compilers.

If anything, the set could have used more such irreverent surprises, since selections do inevitably err on the side of safety over the course of four CDs. The upside is that only two tracks stick out as unlistenable amid the 76.

Do be forewarned that Joe Perry's eight-minute version of "Man of Peace" is not an instrumental. (Suffice it to say there's a reason Perry handed vocals to someone else in the Joe Perry Project as well as Aerosmith.) As for Maroon 5 being inexplicably paired with "I Shall Be Released," rest assured that no one will ever accuse Adam Levine of having moves like Zimmy.

Some numbers that sound promising on paper fizzle, like Sinead O'Connor's "Property of Jesus." If it seems like having pop's most defensive singer cover Dylan's most defensive song is a natural, that's before you hear the bleating tone she adopts for the whole thing.

While a good handful of the more eclectic singer/material matchups are intriguing -- Mexican-American singer Ximena Sarinara doing "I Want You" in flat tones against an electronic pulse, for instance, or indie band Cage the Elephant half-whispering "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" in low-fi/shoegazing mode -- the results don't often merit more than one curious listen.

But the bigger risks occasionally pay off. The finest track, Mariachi El Bronx's "Love Sick," somehow manages to add Mexican-style horn, string, and conga flourishes to Dylan's bitter late-period ballad without having it remotely come off as a joke.

Also a far better idea than it sounds: A piano jazz recasting of "I'd Have You Anytime" -- by Evan Rachel Wood, of all people. It's almost in a league with Diana Krall's similarly subdued but more depressed take on "Simple Twist of Fate."

In the same quiet-storm vein, Adele's "Make You Feel My Love" is a knockout, even if she's already released similar versions of Dylan's most-recorded post-'70s song on almost a half-dozen different studio or live collections.

Judicious cherrypickers should further reach up into the branches for Dierks Bentley's bluegrass take on "Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)"; punk remakes of "Ballad of Hollis Brown," "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," and "Song to Woody" (!) by, respectively, Rise Against, Bad Religion, and Silverstein; a spirited Flogging Molly version of "The Times They Are A-Changin'" that makes the song's implicit Irishness explicit at last; soul great Bettye Lavette, making "Most of the Time" sound every bit as world-weary as you could hope; and the Belle Brigade, making something beautiful and poppy out of "No Time to Think" in the same way the Byrds used to do with Bob in the '60s.

And Miley and Ke$ha? They both acquit themselves, however much you might suspect that Cyrus is enunciating the word "Rimbaud" for the first time, or however much you dread the prospect of the "Tik Tok" queen going a cappella. (If you're not into her version of "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," that's the only composition that gets covered twice, with Ke$ha's nearly instrument-free take being immediately followed by the Kronos Quartet's all-strings version - a nice touch.)

The whole thing is available digitally for a bargain-basement $19.99, as a good a per-song price as you're likely to find for anything not in the public domain. It all goes to a worthy titular cause, which is one more reason to take a chance and make up your own mind whether the Silversun Pickups best Bryan Ferry or Sting at the art of flogging Bob.

It's a measure of Dylan's vast catalog, of course, that even with 75 compositions represented, the hardcore will find some critical omission to be bummed about. I, for one, am sad to think we'll have to wait till "Chimes of Freedom II" to find a forward-thinking interpreter brave enough to tackle "Wiggle, Wiggle."

Amy Neumann: Social Good Stars: LinkedIn's Meg Garlinghouse

This is the fifth installment of the Impact series, #SocialGoodStars. The people highlighted here are passionate, dedicated philanthropists, strengths to their communities, and social media masters. They also happily share their vast knowledge with others, making them shine as leaders in the Social Good world. You can read the fourth interview with Mark Horvath of Invisible People here.

"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."
~Winston Churchill

If anyone understands the overlap of our professional and charitable lives, it's Meg Garlinghouse. She is head of LinkedIn for Good, connecting 135+ million professionals' knowledge and experience with nonprofits' needs, globally.? With nearly twenty years of experience in the technology and philanthropy sectors, a background in international development, and time with the Peace Corps, she's learned first-hand the power of giving. She also currently serves on the Boards of Network for Good and VolunteerMatch. Her Twitter bio notes: "Coffee Addict. Peace Corps Volunteer. Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie Enthusiast. LinkedIn for Good. Bias for action." So grab some coffee (and pie?) and learn more about how the worlds of social good and personal growth are intersecting.

"You personally spent time in the Peace Corps, and have helped with programs leveraging the power of the internet at several organizations including Yahoo!, Network For Good, VolunteerMatch, and of course LinkedIn. Do you have any advice for people looking at ways to jump into philanthropy, in person and online?"

There has been no better time than now for individuals to get involved in philanthropy and have a huge impact. The Internet enables people to find the perfect philanthropic or volunteering opportunity that matches what they care about with ways they can provide support. Coined by DonorsChoose, the notion of citizen philanthropist, the ability for any individual to raise funds and awareness for causes, is also gaining traction. Through nonprofits like Charity:Water, you become the fundraiser for the organization, leveraging your connections to create an even bigger impact for the cause.

I have a strong bias that individuals should use their unique skills and experience to impact an organization. While cash resources are always important, we desperately need people's knowledge, skills and experience to come up with new solutions to old problems. The Internet also allows people to collaborate or crowdsource knowledge, insights and information. Some of my favorite examples of this include Sparked and Ushahidi.

"What recommendations do you have for professionals using LinkedIn, to help them leverage personal volunteering experience and share their favorite causes with others?"

This fall LinkedIn launched a Volunteer and Causes field that enables you to add your volunteer work, causes you care about and the organizations you support to your LinkedIn profile. We wanted to make it easy for professionals to include their social impact as part of their professional identity. In addition to the field being an important addition to your professional profile, it also helps nonprofits build their brand. Your association with an organization is an implicit endorsement and can help strengthen its brand and drive awareness. Your connections will be automatically notified when you add this field.

And don't forget, volunteering is good for your career. There is a great deal of data that indicates that employers care about volunteer work. According to a survey LinkedIn did, 1 out of every 5 hiring managers agree that they have hired a candidate specifically because of their volunteer work.

"Can you talk about the mission behind the newly-created LinkedIn for Good Foundation?"

I think companies' biggest opportunity to impact the world lies in what their core mission and unique assets are. LinkedIn is in the business of connecting talent with opportunity. The mission of LinkedIn for Good is: Connect the talent and passion of professionals with opportunities to use their skills to make a positive impact on the world. The Foundation that we just created is 100% employee-managed and focuses on leveraging the talents of our employees to impact nonprofit organizations.

"Have you seen any trends with nonprofits and LinkedIn? Where do you see online philanthropy headed for 2012 and beyond?"

I believe that human capital is the future of philanthropy. This skill-based, or pro bono marketplace is in its infancy but we are beginning to see a movement. Professionals, particularly Millenials, are looking for more ways they can make an impact through the workplace. Corporations (HP, Microsoft, IBM, Gap, Deloitte and others) are investing heavily in programs that inspire their employees to participate in skill-based volunteering. And several nonprofits have emerged to create a marketplace that connects the right professional with the right opportunity. Taproot is certainly a thought leader in this space who is driving this movement. Other interesting organizations to watch include CatchaFire and Sparked.

I believe that in 2012 and beyond this trend will continue to grow and the collaboration of human knowledge and passion from every corner of the earth will result in some game-changing solutions to the many global challenges we face.

"Where can people find resources and tips LinkedIn for Good offers for philanthropy professionals and nonprofits?"

We created a Learning Center specifically for nonprofits and nonprofit professionals.

NEC NP-V260X

The back of the NEC NP-V260X ($550 street) is bristling with ports and jacks that make it a good fit for a classroom or conference room?s data projection needs. Though it?s light enough to be easily portable, it?s best suited for use within a school or company rather than being lugged by a road warrior. In our testing, its image quality was decidedly better for data than for video. The DLP-based NP-V260X has an XGA (1,024 by 768) resolution, a 4:3 aspect ratio befitting data presentations. Its brightness is rated at 2,600 lumens.

The NP-V260X, a white projector with rounded corners, measures 3.7 by 12.2 by 9.7 inches (HWD) and weighs a reasonably light 5.5 pounds. Two factors make it less portable than it could be. Unlike most projectors in its weight class, it does not come with a carrying case. It also lacks a port for a USB thumb drive, meaning that it can?t run a standalone presentation and you?ll have to have a computer or other image source on hand for it to connect to (or at least access to a network).

As for connectivity, it does have an HDMI-in port, something we?re seeing in XGA as well as higher-resolution projectors. It also has S-Video, and the three RCA jacks for composite video and audio. There are 2 VGA-in ports for connecting to computers (each with its own audio-in jack) and one VGA-out for a monitor (with an audio-out jack). An Ethernet port for LAN connectivity and an RS232 port for PC control round out the picture.

Data and Video Image Testing

Although at 2,600 lumens of rated brightness, the NP-V260X is slightly dimmer than the similar the 3,000-lumen NEC NP-V300X ($779 direct, 3.5 stars), it?s still bright enough so the image, sized to about 65 inches in a diagonal to fill our test screen, stood up well even under considerable ambient light.

In my data image testing using the DisplayMate suite, the NP-V260X showed reasonably good image quality, and should be more than adequate for use in typical business and educational presentations. There was some color fringing at the borders between very bright and very dark areas, and some minor tinting of white areas. White-on-black type was reasonably sharp except at our smallest test size, which is typical of an XGA projector.

All single-chip DLP projectors are potentially subject to the rainbow effect, in which bright areas seem to break up into little red-green-blue rainbows. People vary in their sensitivity to it. I noticed it in the data test images that tend to bring it out, but wasn?t unduly distracted by it.

Video testing was a different matter. Rainbows were readily apparent in high-contrast test scenes, such as the apocalyptic battle scene at the beginning of Terminator 2. The effect was more pronounced than is usual with DLP projector, and was distracting to me?I seem to be about average in my sensitivity to the effect.? The NP-V260X is okay for short video clips as part of a presentation, but I?d hesitate to use it for longer clips, let alone movies.

Other Issues

The projector?s built-in audio system, which employs a single 7-watt speaker, is loud enough to fill a small conference room, with about average sound quality. The NP-V260X is 3D ready, using DLP Link, though you need active shutter glasses (which cost at least $50 a pair) to view content in 3D.

The NEC NP-V260X provides many more connection choices than most of the less expensive XGA business projectors we?ve looked at; the similarly priced Epson EX5210 Multimedia Projector ($549 direct, 3.5 stars) does add a port for a USB thumb drive as well as a USB port for connecting to a PC. The NEC NP-V300X provides similar features to the NP-V260X but at a higher brightness and price. If you need much higher brightness and better data image quality (and no rainbow effect) in an XGA-resolution projector, consider the Editors? Choice Epson PowerLite 1880 MultiMedia Projector ($1,399 direct, 4 stars). But apart from sticker shock, you?ll also pay a price in reduced portability, as it weighs 7.2 pounds?and like the NP-V260X, it lacks a carrying case. The NEC NP64 ($1,099 direct, 4 stars) is far more portable (3.9 pounds), bright at 3,000 lumens, and does come with a case.

The nations weather (AP)

Weather Underground Forecast for Monday, January 23, 2012.

The strong storm system of the Plains will continue to provide active weather to the East on Monday as the system lifts northeastward from the Central Plains to Wisconsin by the morning and Lake Superior by Monday evening. Moderate to heavy snowfall will fall in the northern edge of this system from the Mid-Mississippi Valley through the Upper Great Lakes. Meanwhile, abundant moisture ahead of this system will trigger a mix of rain, freezing rain, and snow in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Significant ice and snow accumulations will be possible by Monday evening. To the south, widely scattered showers with periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms will develop ahead of an associated frontal boundary moving through the Eastern Valleys and Gulf Coast States. Light to moderate showers will also be possible in the Mid-Atlantic, to the north of an associated warm front.

In the West, a powerful storm system carrying a significant plume of moisture will provide more rain showers and heavy high elevation snowfall to northern and central California. Isolated thunderstorms will also be possible across much of central California with locally heavy rain, gusty winds and small hail. Precipitation from this system will spread into the Central Great Basin, southern California, and the Southwest. Meanwhile, precipitation is expected to continue in the Northern Intermountain West. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday have ranged from a morning low of -28 degrees at Clayton Lake, Maine to a high of 84 degrees at Robstown, Texas

6 Things to Know Before Starting a Business

startup imageThis post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.

An entrepreneur?s life can be a real roller coaster. Having started a few businesses in my career, I thought it would be useful to highlight some of the hard-won experience I?ve learned throughout the process ? the kind of advice I wish I?d known when I started my first, or even second, business.

1. Don?t Underestimate a Business Plan

If you?re not seeking outside funding at the start, it?s tempting to forgo writing out a formal business plan. However, taking the time to write out your business plan, forecasts and marketing strategy is a particularly effective way to hone your vision. All planning should center around two essential questions: How is my business serving a particular need or pain point, and does this represent a major market opportunity?

In addition, don?t overlook the exit strategy at the beginning. Do you want your children to take over the company? Do you want to sell it? It?s critical to think about these questions from the start, as the building blocks of your company (such as legal structure) should vary depending on your preferred final outcome.

2. Don?t Get Stuck in the Past

My husband and I launched our first online legal document filing service in 1997, and then re-entered the market with our second company in 2009. While our previous experience certainly gave us a leg up the second time around, we soon realized the market landscape had changed dramatically since our first company. We had to stop dwelling on previous competitors, customer needs and service expectations and write a brand new playbook.

The marketplace and your business plan are living entities; they?re continually in flux. Whether it?s your first company or fifth in a given market, you?ve got to keep asking: What do we need to do today?

3. Don?t Hire Friends

I form bonds quickly and make fast friends with people around me. While I generally consider this a positive trait, it has created some difficult situations when running a business. At times I have been reluctant to let employees go even though I know it?s not a good fit. If things aren?t working out between an employee and startup, it?s time to put feelings aside and trust that the person will find a better situation elsewhere.

Unfortunately, I?ve also learned that people can let you down, ranging from laziness to fraud. I still believe that faith in people is a good thing. However, blind faith can bring trouble.

4. Don?t Dive in Without a Plan

Just like the business plan, it?s critical to think through any initiative you wish to launch. When you?re in the midst of startup fever, it?s easy to get wrapped up with every new idea. However, be careful of losing focus. Moving forward is critical for any startup, and constantly switching directions can impede this forward progress. With each new idea, step back and think how it fits into your company?s overall goal and vision, then create a plan for how to make it happen.

5. Don?t Fall Into a Discount Trap

At the beginning, too many young companies feel the pressure to heavily discount their prices in order to win business. While customer acquisition is important, attracting customers at unsustainable price levels will just result in a race to the bottom. After all, raising your prices on goods and certain services can be a tricky proposition. I?ve learned that you?re better off in the long run focusing on how to bring more value to customers, rather than simply slashing your prices.

6. Don?t Be Afraid to Fail

Soccer coach Sven-Goran Eriksson once said, ?The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure.? An entrepreneur?s path is uncharted and sometimes a little bumpy. It?s easy to get stressed or downright panicked, but you cannot let fear prevent you from following your dreams. Think of it this way: the sooner you fail, the closer you are to discovering what works.

Conclusion

While you can?t guarantee the outcome of any new venture, you can stack the odds in your favor. These are six lessons I?ve learned over time and countless others are out there. If you?re open, you can gain wisdom from everything you try and gather insight from fellow entrepreneurs. What do you wish you knew when you started your first business?

New watchdog agency reviewing payday lending (AP)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? The Obama administration's new consumer protection agency held its first public hearing Thursday about payday lending, an industry that brings in some $7 billion a year in fees nationwide.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said testimony from the session in Birmingham ? where City Council members recently passed a six-month moratorium on new payday lending businesses amid concern over their prevalence and high interest fees ? would help guide the development of future regulations.

Director Richard Cordray said the bureau recognizes the need for short-term loans, but the lending needs to help consumers, not harm them.

"Before this month, the federal government did not examine payday lenders," Cordray said. "Some state regulators have been examining payday lenders for compliance with their state laws. We hope to use our combined resources as effectively as possible."

About 19 million American households now have payday loans, officials said. With interest rates often in the teens and easy application procedures, lenders said they generate business through radio and television advertising, plus word-of-mouth and by locating offices in areas where other small-loan lenders are located.

Many in the standing-room crowd of more than 400 were lending company customers or employees who wore "I Choose Payday Advance" stickers provided by the industry.

Tanzy Bonner told a panel she got a payday loan to cover the cost of her 6-year-old's birthday party; LaDonna Banks said she got one because she couldn't work after donating a kidney to her brother.

"I borrowed the money, I paid the money back," Banks said.

Steven Hoyt, a Birmingham City Council member who supports the moratorium, urged the agency not to be swayed by such stories because the loans come with exorbitant interest fees.

"It's fleecing by any other name," Hoyt said.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has been in the spotlight because of Republican opposition to its formation and President Barack Obama's use of a recess appointment earlier this month to tap Cordray, a former Ohio attorney general, as its director.

With GOP legislators blocking the nomination because they said the agency lacks sufficient congressional oversight, Obama installed Cordray ? a move that Republicans said was an unprecedented power grab. Democrats disagreed, saying Republican presidents routinely filled vacancies by the same process. Obama nominated Cordray after congressional Republicans opposed consumer advocate and Harvard University professor Elizabeth Warren becoming director.

Republicans kept up the criticism over the bureau's formation as Thursday's hearing began. The chairman of the Alabama GOP, Bill Armistead, said Cordray's decisions "could have devastating impacts on an already fragile economy."

"The last thing we need is another big government agency putting more regulations on our businesses," Armistead said in a statement.

Often criticized by advocates for the poor, payday loans are short-term, high-interest loans that work like cash advances. Storefront payday loan operations are prevalent in middle- to lower-income areas around Alabama, sometimes taking over closed convenience stores or fast-food restaurants.

Loan amounts in Alabama are capped at $500 by state law, which limits the maximum interest rate to 17.5 percent. An industry website said the annualized interest rate for a 14-day loan of $100 tops 456 percent.

In a typical transaction, a borrower writes a check for $117.50 and gets $100 from the payday lender, who holds the check for a short period before depositing it. If the customer needs the check held another two weeks, he pays another $17.50 fee.

Officials said more than 20 percent of Alabama households have taken out loans from payday storefronts or similar businesses at more than 1,000 locations statewide. Opponents said the businesses prey on people who lack access to traditional loans when they get in a pinch for cash.

"People get churned through the system six, eight, 10 times a year," said Stephen Stetson, a policy analyst at Alabama Arise, a Montgomery-based anti-poverty organization. "If we have laws against gouging for gas and water, we ought to have laws against gouging for loans."

The head of Ohio-based Community Choice Financial Inc., which operates in Alabama and more than a dozen other states, said the industry serves some 60 million people nationally and already is regulated by states, licensing requirements and federal disclosure laws. CEO Ted Saunders said he was offended by suggestions that payday lenders take advantage of poorly informed people.

"Listening to what you heard here today, you'd think my thousands of employees go to work every day to hurt their neighbors," he said. Rather than enacting sweeping federal rules, he said, states should concentrate on getting rid of "bad actors" in the business.

A Democratic state lawmaker in Alabama also expressed concern about the potential for new regulations, defending state oversight of the industry and arguing that low-income people need access to quick, easy-to-obtain loans. Many people can't walk into a bank and get a loan or withdraw money from an automatic teller, said Rep. Oliver Robinson of Birmingham.

"The people who live in my district don't have alternatives," Robinson said.

Google results fall short, rare miss hurts shares (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Google Inc's quarterly results fell short of Wall Street's heightened expectations for the holiday season as declining search advertising rates contributed to a rare miss, triggering a 9 percent slide in its shares.

The No. 1 Internet search engine underperformed on both revenue and earnings in the fourth quarter, disappointing investors who had counted on record U.S. online-commerce to prop up results.

Its shares dived to about $583 in after-hours trade, from the Nasdaq close of $639.57 before the results. Several analysts zeroed in on an 8 percent drop in cost-per-click, or money paid by advertisers to the company, versus analyst estimates of a slight increase.

"Expectations had got ahead of themselves for Google, largely because investors don't have a good feel for what happens outside the U.S.," said Stifel Nicolaus analyst Jordan Rohan. "North America has remained strong, but there are parts of the world where there's a lot of economic pressure.

"I would have to assume Europe -- particularly Germany and some others undergoing austerity measures -- the underlying demand in those countries is weak."

Google's net revenue, which excludes fees shared with partner websites, was $8.13 billion in the fourth quarter, versus $6.37 billion a year earlier. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S were looking for $8.4 billion.

That shortfall marks an unusual slip-up for a company that has exceeded Wall Street's revenue targets for eight consecutive quarters.

The number of clicks on Google's search ads increased sharply during the last three months of the year, but the cost per clicks -- the money that Google charges advertisers for the ads -- decreased 8 percent from the third quarter and 8 percent from the year ago period.

Executives on a conference call blamed foreign currency effects and changes in ad quality formats.

EXPENSES SWELL AGAIN

Operating expenses increased to 32 percent of revenue during the fourth quarter, from 30 percent of revenue in the year-ago quarter.

Google said on Thursday it earned $2.71 billion, or $8.22 per share, in the fourth quarter, compared with $2.54 billion, or $7.81 per share, a year earlier.

Excluding certain items, Google earned $9.50 per share, lagging estimates for $10.49 a share.

Some analysts questioned whether Google was investing heavily on projects -- such as its Android mobile software or Chrome Internet browser -- at the expense of the bottom line.

Another new initiative -- the fledgling Google+ -- appeared to be gaining momentum. Executives said three-fifths of the service's estimated 90 million users "engage" with it daily, and four-fifths do so weekly. User engagement or time spent on the social network, which Google hopes can eventually take on Facebook, is key to determining future revenue potential.

"Google+ investments are showing some results. They are investing in future revenue growth," said Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry.

For now, Wall Street wants answers on Google's mobile strategy as it dives into a fiercely competitive smartphone market through its $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola.

Investors have been uneasy about Google's plans to buy Motorola, a deal the companies expect to close early this year. Chief Executive Larry Page has never fully detailed his long-term strategy for the asset other than saying it will be run as a separate company. Analysts say the company fears alienating Samsung Electronics and other Motorola rivals that helped Android become the world's foremost mobile-software system.

Executives said more than 250 million devices powered by Android had been activated since its inception.

"Google got hit with the ugly stick," said Fort Pitt Capital analyst Kim Forrest. "You've got to ask yourself, 'Where is the money going? What are they spending it on?' I have a feeling it is on platforms like Chrome and Android, and things like that."
