China's Wen says to start policy fine-tuning in (Reuters)

SHANGHAI (Reuters) ? China will start to fine-tune its economic policies in the first quarter, Premier Wen Jiabao said in remarks published by state media Monday, the most explicit indication yet of further monetary policy easing.

"We should pay attention to the economic situation in January and the first quarter. We should see things early and act quickly and pre-emptive steps and fine-tuning needs to start from the first quarter," Wen was quoted as telling a meeting held to seek experts' policy opinions last week.

Data released Friday showed spluttering domestic demand as imports crumbled to their lowest in more than two years and weaker-than-forecast bank lending signaled to investors that policymakers would soon make a fresh bid to bolster growth.

The government has already pledged to fine-tune economic policies since late 2011 to head off sharper growth slowdown.

The People's Bank of China cut banks' reserve requirements for the first time in three years in November. More reserve ratio cuts are expected in coming months.

A Reuters poll conducted last month showed the central bank may cut the reserve ratio by a total of 200 bps throughout 2012 to 19 percent.

The market had expected the government to cut RRR ahead of the Chinese Lunar New Year last month, but the central bank opted to use open market operations to inject cash into the economy. Wen's comments came as the market had already cooled its expectations of such a central bank move more recently.

So far the policy fine-tuning has focused more on cutting taxes and red tape for the small businesses that provide about 75 percent of the jobs in China.

Lunar New Year distortions will make policymakers wary of any hasty reaction. Most analysts expect them to assess January and February data combined before deciding whether the current policy of gentle easing should be intensified.

However, the government will stick to its policy to cool the property market, Wen said, reiterating the goal of bringing housing prices to a "reasonable level."

The government will step up support for the real economy, especially small companies, and lift control on informal lending markets to support private businesses, Wen was quoted as saying.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Gabrielle Giffords, the recently retired congresswoman from Arizona who was shot in an assassination attempt 13 months ago, returned to Washington Friday for double honors. The Navy named a ship after her and she saw President Barack Obama sign the last piece of legislation she authored into law.

In a ceremony at the Pentagon, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus unveiled an artist's rendering of the USS Gabrielle Giffords, a littoral combat ship. The craft is among the Navy's most versatile and can operate in shallower coastal waters than larger ships.

"God bless the USS Gabrielle Giffords and all who sail in her," Mabus said at the ceremony.

Giffords was shot in the head and grievously wounded in January 2011 as she met with constituents outside a supermarket in Tucson, Ariz. Twelve others also were wounded in the rampage that left six dead, including a federal judge, a Giffords aide and a 9-year-old girl. Christina Taylor Green had an interest in government and politics and wanted to hear Giffords speak.

At Friday's ceremony, Mabus announced that Christina Taylor's mother, Roxanna, is the ship's "sponsor." Green's initials will be welded into the ship's keel.

In the months since she was shot, Giffords, 41, has been treated in Houston as well as Arizona as she relearned how to walk and speak. Her progress had seemed remarkable, but she resigned from Congress last month to concentrate on her recovery. Giffords stepped down on the day the House passed her bill by a vote of 428-0.

The legislation Obama signed Friday increases the penalties for using ultra-light aircraft when smuggling drugs into the country. The small, single-seat planes are an increasingly favored tool that smugglers use to fly at night and then release their haul without detection.

Obama said he told Giffords that he expected to see more of her in the months and years to come.

"I'm confident that, while this legislation may have been her last act as a congresswoman, it will not be her last act of public service," Obama said in a statement released by the White House.

WR Ward willing to restructure deal with Steelers

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Steelers' wide receiver Hines Ward wants to finish his career in Pittsburgh, offering to restructure his contract to do it.

Ward posted on his Facebook page Saturday that he's already told the Steelers he's willing to work with them on altering his deal so he can remain with the team. Ward's comments came after NFL.com reported the team was planning to cut the franchise's all-time leading receiver.

The 35-year-old Ward is scheduled to make $4 million in 2012. He's coming off a season in which he finished with 46 receptions for 381 yards and two touchdowns, the lowest totals in each category since he was a rookie in 1998.

Ward became the eighth player in league history to reach 1,000 career receptions in the regular-season finale against Cleveland.

Study: The truth about online dating sites selling you the science of ...

Posted by Andrey Golub (aVg) on Feb 8, 2012 in Social Networks | 0 comments

A new research study observes the use of ?scientific? research in order to give weight to online dating services that offer to find the perfect soulmate for users.

Ever tried to find?love through your computer? Online dating has grown into a large, billion dollar industry over the past 15 years, and has become a mainstream way to meet your future mate. However, a new study, led by Northwestern University Associate Professor of Social Psychology, Eli Finkel, examines the truth behind online dating sites, and the bold claims that science-based algorithms will find your soulmate.

Finkel, along with four other co-authors, reviewed over 400 psychological studies in their 64-page analysis. The scope of the article covers general sites like Match and OkCupid, as well as niche sites, family matchmaker sites like Kizmeet, video/virtual dating sites like WooMe, self-report algorithm sites like eHarmony, websites like ScientificMatch and even?mobile dating apps?such as Zoosk and Badoo. Beyond the scope of the article are sites like Craigslist, hookup sites, infidelity sites, websites for group dates, social networking Facebook-esque destinations and MMORPGs like WOW.

The report begins by showing that the stigma of dating websites being an online cantina of the unsociable, the inept and the sleezy anti-social, has been shed in recent years. Since 1997, and more drastically in the early 2000s, a substantial number of singles have met partners through online dating sites. Match claims that at least 1 in 5 relationships begin online.

In fact, since online dating managed to dissociate itself from the more socially unacceptable printed personal advertisements and video dating of the last decades, meeting on the Internet has become the second most common way to meet a mate. According to a study conducted in 2009 with a national sample of 4,002 adults, 22% said they had met on the Internet; making the Internet the premier way to find a partner, after meeting through friends. The statistic carries on the trend from 2006?s 20%, and is assumed to be greater today thanks to technological progress.

However, the study states that the shift in attitude can be partially attributed to the millions of dollars that online dating sites spend to promote the services. Two problems brought up by the claims advertised by online dating sites concern the encouragement of ?soulmates?, and the authority of ?science-based? algorithm matching.

According to the authors, the soulmate idea pushed onto users by various online dating sites can have a negative impact on romantic relationships. By encouraging users to find that perfect?match, websites promote a seed of thought associated with relationship dysfunction: ?Indeed, people with strong beliefs in romantic destiny (sometimes called soulmate beliefs)?that a relationship between two people either is or is not ?meant to be??are especially likely to exit a romantic relationship when problems arise.? The authors assert that the long-term, healthy relationship emerges from overcoming challenges.

Many sites other than eHarmony (like Match) have begun to offer suggested matches based on algorithms. The basic problem which the study?s authors have with scientific claims is that the research is not valid; dating sites are riding the authority of the science claims, but haven?t ?[reported] research methods and statistical analyses in sufficient detail to allow for independent replication,? or adhered to standards for interpreting data. The authors also drop an FTC bomb for good measure; pointing to deceptive advertising in regards to scientific claims and consumer testimonials. In addition, the authors point out that the algorithms focus on short-term versus long term, and fails to take into account how partners grow and mature over time or life circumstances that could help or hurt the relationship.

But online dating isn?t all bad. Aside from the advertising of dating sites, dating profiles relegate ?three-dimensional people? to two-dimensional summations; an argument similar to?m00t?s?multi-faceted identity argument against Google and Facebook at last years Web 2.0 Summit. However, online dating has enormous potential to expedite a time-consuming affair, according to the authors. Also, the medium offers unprecedented access to large numbers of potential partners. While dating sites have had problems weeding out the deception and the criminal, ultimately, users have confidence that they can screen and communicate with potential partners in a safe and comfortable setting. With those positives in mind, and the pitfalls outlined, there are ?substantial opportunities? to improve online dating in the future. Finkel?s study will be appearing in a forthcoming journal of the?Association for Psychological Science.

Sarkozy meets Israeli soldier held hostage 5 years (AP)

PARIS ? An Israeli-French soldier who was held hostage for five years by Palestinian militants met Wednesday with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Gilad Schalit has maintained a low profile since his release from captivity in Gaza in October in exchange for 1,027 Palestinian prisoners.

But he made an unusual public appearance Wednesday, meeting with Sarkozy in his presidential palace in Paris. Schalit did not speak to reporters afterward, but left the palace with a smile, bundled against a winter cold snap. His parents were also at the meeting.

"We are very moved," his father, Noam Schalit, said afterward. He thanked Sarkozy for his commitment to obtaining the soldier's release.

Sarkozy praised Gilad Schalit for his "exemplary courage" and his parents for "their determination and their dignity in the face of the ordeal and the anguish," according to a statement from the president's office.

At an annual dinner later held by the French Jewish community, Sarkozy castigated Schalit's captors.

"Shame ... on those who did that," he said, adding that "no idea, no ideology, no situation can justify what was done to Gilad Schalit."

Hamas-allied militants captured Schalit in a 2006 cross-border raid, and his plight captured Israel's attention for years.

Sarkozy praised Israel for its own dogged efforts to return one of its sons, calling it a mark of Israel's democracy "because in a democracy we attach importance to one life" and "every family in Israel knows he can have a Gilad Schalit."

He then advised Israel to file a complaint for the recent death of a young girl hit by a car driven by two French tourists who fled to France and cannot be extradited. The family of Lee Zeitouni, or the state, can file the complaint and the two French men could be tried in a French court.

"I call for justice," Sarkozy said.
