Academy Awards Cancel Best Song Nominees Performances

?

?

If you planned on reliving your favorite tunes from last year's best films, the Academy has shattered your dreams. As you may have previously heard, they're omitting performances of the Best Original Song nominations, breaking a years-long tradition. Deadline reported that although Fox and Disney have formally protested the cut ? both studios have songs nominated for Rio and The Muppets ? their plea has been shot down.?

?

The Academy's "complicated" voting system only allowed for the two songs, after voters sorted through 39 tunes and scored each on a scale of 6 to 10 points. Per Academy rules, only those that received an average of 8.25 points could be nominated ? and in this case, only two made the cut.

?

With the famously long telecast shortened, there should be more room to see what musical supervisors Pharrell Williams and Hans Zimmer have up their sleeve. Their role was newly created for the 84th awards ceremony, despite the Oscars rarely hosting musical performances outside of the nominated songs and the usual spoofs. An inside source at Deadline has reassured that decisions about the Best Song performance omission may not be final. "The show is not locked yet. Decisions about this and other things continue to be evaluated by the team trying to produce the most entertaining 3 hours possible."?

?

It seems like a huge missed opportunity to ditch The Muppets' musical extravaganza, especially given that last year's film was the first from the much-loved puppet troupe in 12 years. Geez Academy, there's really no room for two frakkin' songs?

A Multiple Sclerosis Caregivers View - Understanding Multiple ...

When a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis is given, many people go through the medical investigative process of MRI and/or spinal tap. Fortunately, my husband had enough symptoms over the years to pretty much confirm the diagnosis. After two MRIs, one of his brain and one of his spinal cord, it was evident that he had this dreaded disease and did not require the dreaded spinal tap.

So just what is Multiple Sclerosis??

Thanks to the care we receive from our MS nurse and all the info provided to us by the manufacturers of his chosen drug Rebif; EMD Serono and Pfizer, we are never left out in the dark wondering what is going on. So with our personal nurse's help, we learned more than we could ever imagine about this disease. Multiple sclerosis means "many scars" and after seeing the MRI, and the doctor pointing to different places on his brain, we now know what these are. MS is a disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS consists of the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves and the process of the development of these lesions or "scars" is called sclerosis.

Who gets Multiple Sclerosis?

  • Over 2.5 million people around the world have MS.
  • In the United States alone, there are over 400,000.?
  • Women have MS twice as much as men.
  • Diagnosis is mostly people between 15 and 60 years of age.
  • MS is more common in Caucasians and those of Northern European descent. But people of any background can get MS.

What causes MS?

Unfortunately, the cause of MS is unknown. It is thought to be an autoimmune disease. A normal immune system helps fight foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria. During the occurrence of an autoimmune disease, something triggers the immune system to attack the body itself. Some health care providers believe that MS may be triggered by an infection; most likely a virus, but MS is not contagious.?

One thing our doctor told us when we asked about our future and the future of our children was to take large doses of Vitamin D. His theory was that sunlight seemed to play a major factor in MS. He feels that taking a multi-vitamin is fine, but extra Vitamin D is an important factor. When looking at the map of the world, countries with warmer climates have much less of the disease than places with cold winters and warm summers.?

What happens in MS?

The CNS is made up of nerve cells that send signals to each other. Each nerve cell, or neuron is covered with a protective coating called myelin. Myelin consists of cholesterol, which is required to cover the nerves and provide conduction. ?In multiple sclerosis, the myelin sheath is broken down and attacked. Imagine a string of pearls and each pearl has a coating of myelin and the string in between, called the axon is holding the pearls together. As the multiple sclerosis attacks the myelin sheath, the nerves break down resulting in a break of communication known as demyelinization, which can lead to permanent symptoms and disability.?

Why Crochet Patterns Are Growing In Popularity With Craft Fans ...

Crochet is easy to learn, fun to do, and getting more popular for a number of reasons. The only supplies needed are yarn, hooks in the correct size, and scissors. There are many crochet patterns available to make an assortment of items using different stitches.

This simple handcraft was originally thought to be a hobby better suited for the rich upper class. It has been enjoyed in Italy, France, and England since the fifteen hundreds. This hobby made its way to China and Europe in the seventeen hundreds and was taught to women in American schools by the eighteen hundreds. This is also when patterns and instructions began showing up in magazines and books for the public.

Original hooks in various sizes were carved from fish bones, wood, brass, and ivory. Modern products are manufactured from steel, aluminum, plastic, and wood. Yarns are sold in skeins of numerous solid or multi colors made from animal fibers like mohair, angora, silk, wool, or alpaca. Linen and cotton are made from vegetable substances, and popular polyester, nylon, and acrylic comes from plant fibers.

This hobby is not just for common folk. Singers like Aretha Franklin and actresses including Ellen Corby from The Walton, Anne Bancroft from Helen Keller, Bette Davis from Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, and Patricia Arquette who played in Stigmata take pleasure in this past time. Even Rosie Grier, a football player from the sixties, and President James Buchanan in the eighteen hundreds did this in their spare time.

This traditional handicraft is relaxing, relieves stress, and easily done while watching television or talking to family members and friends. Projects and supplies are easily taken on vacation, meetings, or other events. It is also cheaper to make clothing and gifts for family members and friends than purchasing items from stores. Giving a finished project as a present is more personal and means more to the recipient. There are some crocheters who have turned this into a profitable business by selling merchandise they have made from bought patterns or their own unique designs.

Clothing and other items can be made for males and females from infants to seniors. Cold weather accessories like neck scarves, mittens, gloves, and caps are always appreciated. Vests, sweaters, shirts, and socks are popular presents. Belts and slippers can be made using simple or extravagant designs. No home is complete without a handmade afghan or shawl to curl up with. Even kitchen necessities like potholders, oven mitts, tablecloths, dinner mats, and aprons are great ideas. Handcrafted totes, purses, and diaper bags filled with baby clothes, blankets, booties, and bibs are excellent gifts to give.

Home decorations such as rugs, curtains, doilies, coasters, ornaments, and wall hangings add to the appeal of a home. Other items to make include bookmarks, jewelry, stuffed animal toys, puppets, and doll clothes. Pets are also pampered with sweaters, coats, toys, and cat hammocks.

Hundreds of crochet patterns are offered in publications and sites online. Designs are traditional, modern, and everything in between to accommodate any fashion sense or need. This handcraft has become more widely recognized as a cost effective way to meet the needs of friends and family.

Undisciplined Horned Frogs lose to No. 17 SDSU (AP)

SAN DIEGO ? TCU was able to hang with No. 17 San Diego State for several minutes Saturday night, even taking a 23-16 lead thanks to five 3-point shots.

Then it started to go sideways for the Horned Frogs, who quickly gave up the lead and lost 83-73.

Jamaal Franklin had 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Aztecs, who clinched their seventh straight 20-win season.

James Rahon added 16, Chase Tapley 14 and DeShawn Stephens 13 for the Aztecs (20-3, 6-1 Mountain West). SDSU has eight 20-win seasons overall in 13 seasons under coach Steve Fisher, including last year's school-record 34-3 performance.

With No. 11 UNLV losing at Wyoming, the Aztecs regained sole possession of the conference lead.

Kyan Anderson had 22 points and J.R. Cadot 15 for TCU (13-9, 3-4), which lost its seventh straight to SDSU.

Coach Jim Christian said the Horned Frogs were undisciplined.

"There's not one thing. It's a bunch of things," he said. "It's disciplined stuff. We're just not being consistent and disciplined, especially on the defensive end of the floor. You're not going to be able to beat them."

Said guard Hank Thorns: "We just did not play a very good game. We had too many mistakes and it's hard to beat a good team like San Diego State when you play like that. It's hard to know how to fix it. We were trying tonight, but nothing seemed to work."

After shooting just 31.3 percent from the field in a 17-point loss at Colorado State and a two-point home win against Boise State, the Aztecs made 50.8 percent of their shots. Several nice dunks helped the Aztecs with the better percentage, including one when Franklin came flying in for a rebound and an impressive reverse slam that made it 39-31 in the first half.

SDSU outrebounded TCU 35-21.

"It did feel like we were back to normal," Franklin said. "We were actually running the ball and we weren't really relying on set plays. We just ran the ball, everyone contributed and we got open shots."

San Diego State overcame an early deficit to take a 46-39 halftime lead, and then outscored the Horned Frogs 12-6 to start the second half. Franklin hit a bank shot and Tapley had a layup and two free throws to open the half. Franklin hit a jumper, Tapley had another layup and Garrett Green a reverse slam dunk to push the lead to 58-45 with 16:10 left.

TCU made four 3-point shots in the first 7:15 to take a 23-16 lead.

The Aztecs tightened their defense and went on a 17-4 run to jump ahead 33-27 with 4:46 before halftime. Franklin started the run with a dunk and Rahon added a 3-pointer.

Stephens had three points during the run and had six more the rest of the half, including consecutive baskets for a 37-29 lead.

97% The Artist

Didn't really know what this was about for along time, saw the posters everywhere but never really took much notice, then I saw the trailer and knew I wanted to see it...mainly out of curiosity.Freakin awesome is all I can say, this film is 100% win from start to finish I tell no lie, yes it is a black and white film, yes it is a SILENT film and yes it is just like those old scratchy films you've seen in documentaries from the era, so why see it you ask?If you wanna see a homage to old 1920's films with dashing well dressed chaps, cute dames and lovely choreographed sequences harking back to the days of the Hollywood musicals then this is for you. The plot isn't too original really, the film is very much along the lines of 'Singin in the Rain' in terms of the gentle charming humour and basic story outline, add to this a lead man who in my opinion looks very much like Gene Kelly and he dances well too!The two leads in this film (to me) are unknown performers (unless you live in France) yet they look like Hollywood regulars and fit this film amazingly, Jean Dujardin is good looking, elegant and has good visual comedy skills whilst B?r?nice Bejo is very cute and the perfect partner, a great match to Kelly and Reynolds. There are one or two well known faces from Hollywood in the film, Goodman has a main role within the film but he doesn't really fit the bill for me, just kept thinking 'oh its John Goodman in black and white'.Its hard to think you could watch a silent film these days but it really is such a welcome difference or change of pace just to have a musical score, the only problem I had with the film was the lack of intertitles or text that comes up in place of sound/speech from the actors.A great feel good movie with stunning visuals achieved using the basic technology of the time, its got plenty of charm, heart and warmth, there's something about a black and white film that is just so cozy :) You simply can't help but enjoy and smile whilst watching this, younger viewers and teens beware...there are no explosions or cgi is this film (hurrah!)
