Elissa Kravetz: Slow Down and Smile

Inspiration finds me in the oddest of places. Usually when I am calm, after a yoga class or meditation. And almost always when I'm by myself on a nice long breezy car ride. The inspiration for this blog came while I was spending the weekend at a holistic retreat in Palm Springs.

Those that are close to me know that I have an intense love for animals, all sorts of creatures. We have a "no bug killing" policy in our office. If you see a bug, you trap it and kindly put it back outside where it belongs.

Anyways, I was enjoying a lovely weekend in the desert and sat down to jot down some thoughts in my journal and I placed my journal right on top of an ant. I killed the ant. Not only did I kill the ant, but I started watching it and saw it struggling and this just ripped my heart open, because even though for the most part ants are pretty annoying pesky little guys, they are still living breathing creatures. So, needless to say, this upset me.

Now being away in the desert alone, away from work, away from the city, gives you time to think. I most likely wouldn't be spending time thinking about accidentally killing an ant if I was in the hustle and bustle of my everyday life.

I realized that this was a metaphor for something else. People do things that they simply do not mean to. People do things because they are moving too fast. People hurt others because for most of us, we are too wrapped up in ourselves to realize that our actions may be harming another.

We all need to stop. Stop and observe. Observe ourselves. How are we treating our family? Our friends? Our teachers, bosses, employees, the person at Starbucks? Are we rude or do we smile? Do we bother to make eye contact?

For those of you reading this, I hope for even just a few moments you pause and think about how you treat others. Be a little kinder today. Slow down. Breathe. Think about all of the wonderful things and blessings that are in your life. Especially all of the people around you. Realize that very rarely do the things that we are afraid of happen. Most people act in a state of fear all day, every day. Therefore their actions are fear based, we waste so much time worrying. We need to worry less and love more. Worry less and care more.

There's enough to go around. We are here to teach each other. Those who piss us off the most are our biggest teachers.

As we continue visiting schools with The Farley Project, I want to make sure that the kids observe how they are treating each other. Slow down. Smile. Think about your actions. We want to get through to the kids, that what they think may "not be a big deal" could be a very big deal to someone else. When kids go to school they learn about math, science and history. Why not learn about compassion, love and self esteem?! This is our message. We have been working with one school here in Los Angeles and we are ready to go city by city, school by school, until we make a real difference. If we all became a bit more mindful, the world would be a much sweeter place.

With so much love and smiles,

Elissa

Demarco: Great standings shakeup is under way

Teams with early streaks, both bad and good, are seeing shifts

OPINION

updated 2:46 p.m. ET June 1, 2012

Tony DeMarco

Obvious in some cases, a little more subtle in others, the great standings shakeup is happening in a division near you.

In fact, so much has been going on in the past two weeks that if this was late September, there would be headlines about dramatic crashes and out-of-nowhere rises. Remember those, fans of the Red Sox, Braves, Rays and Cardinals?

But it's only early June, so nobody notices as much, even though the recent landscape-shifting developments have been quite significant. So without further ado, from the it's-a-marathon-not-a-sprint dept., we bring you:

Indians-White Sox
Things sure looked good for the first-place Tribe on May 24. After finishing off a three-game sweep of the confounding Tigers, Manny Acta's team peaked at 26-18, and enjoyed a 3 1/2-game lead over Chicago and a six-game margin over Detroit.

Derek Lowe was 6-1 with a 2.15 ERA, Jason Kipnis was emerging as a breakout player, the disabled list was all but empty and the only thing to complain about (and Chris Perez did so) was the tepid attendance at Progressive Field.

Then came the beginnings of a swoon reminiscent of the 2011 Indians. Outscored 16-35 in a three-game sweep by the White Sox, five losses in six games, Lowe lit up for 10 hits and eight earned runs in 2.1 innings, Carlos Santana placed on the seven-day concussion list, Jack Hannahan placed on the 15-day disabled list and the inevitable Travis Hafner injury, this one requiring knee surgery that will sideline him for at least a month. Mercy.

Which brings us to Ken "Hawk" Harrelson's favorite team riding an eight-game winning streak that has vaulted them to atop the division heading into June. Here are the top five reasons why (besides Paulie Konerko, of course):

  • Jake Peavy is pitching like Jake Peavy in his Petco Park salad days.
  • Adam Dunn's return to the offensive living with 16 homers and 37 RBI through May (and 82 strikeouts in 220 plate appearances, because some things never change).
  • Chris Sale's emergence as an elite starter, with a blip/very temporary return to the pen due to over-concern about arm trouble. Here are Sale's career numbers including this season: 10-5-2.49, 152 innings, 109 hits, 53 walks, 172 K's, 1.066 WHIP.
  • Addison Reed's emergence as the closer after the misguided idea of using rookie left-hander Hector Santiago in that role out of the gate.
  • Everyone knows about Konerko's MVP-like first two months, but in his shadow, Dayan Viciedo also has been raking. Viciedo's May: .351 batting average, .619 slugging percentage, .995 OPS, 8 HR and 24 RBI.

Sure, there are questions about staying power. Can Peavy stay healthy? Will Sale's dominance continue, and will his innings be restricted later this season, as his season high is 71 innings? Also, the other three rotation members have 5-plus ERAs, and the bullpen is very young.

But run differential says the White Sox can hang around. Through May, they are at +37 while the rest of the division is in the red: Cleveland -24, Detroit -8, Kansas City -19, Minnesota -74.

Orioles-Red Sox
Buck Showalter's Orioles topped out at 27-14 on May 17, when the distance between them and the last-place Red Sox was 6 1/2 games. But the only good news since was about them locking up streaking Adam Jones with a long-term deal.

The O's ended the month by losing five in a row and eight of 10, and first place could become a memory this weekend, when they will play a series at Tropicana Field. With series after that in Boston and against Philadelphia ? and the top-to-bottom spread in the AL East down to just 2 1/2 games entering June ? the Orioles could be at the bottom of the division before you know it.

Jake Arrieta's inconsistencies continue, and an alarming home/road split is emerging: Home ? 0-4, 6.43; Road ? 2-1, 2.77. And while every pitcher benefits by getting away from Coors Field, let's face it, Jason Hammel pitched his way out of the rotation in Colorado, and is 40-47-4.84 in his career, so his 6-2-3.06 line isn't likely to hold.

So, slumps like the one Matt Wieters is enduring are going to be more costly, and Jim Johnson will have fewer ninth-inning leads to protect. Also, the Orioles' +8 run differential is the worst in the division.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox finished May on a 14-5 run, the bullpen has turned into a strength, they're scoring more than enough runs despite a staggering string of position-player injuries and they're back right where they should be.

Angels
All together now April doomsayers, say, 'Oops'. As terrible as it got in an 8-15 first month, the recent eight-of-nine run put the Angels back at .500 through 52 games, making a 90-win season a 64-46 finish away. And while nobody's doubting that the Rangers are going anywhere but back to the postseason, the current deficit isn't overwhelming.

Jered Weaver's back injury is an obvious concern, but this team successfully has been remade on the fly. The OF-1B-DH logjam is a thing of the past with Bobby Abreu's departure and Vernon Wells' thumb surgery that likely has ended his days as a regular in the Angels outfield.

Mike Trout was in Salt Lake City and Mark Trumbo mostly was on the bench through mid-April. Now both are lineup mainstays, and in case you haven't noticed, Albert Pujols raised his average from .197 on May 14 to .243 through May, while hitting seven homers and driving in 16 runs.

The back end of the bullpen also been reconstructed, with Scott Downs and Ernesto Frieri (nice pickup from the Padres by former reliever Jerry Dipoto) sharing closing duties and Jordan Walden setting up.

Braves-Marlins
Nobody won more games in May than the Marlins (21-8), and they're on the verge of moving into first place after sweeping the now-first-place Nationals.

From the rubble of an 8-14 April that included Ozzie Guillen's suspension, Heath Bell's struggles and inconsistency everywhere, the focus has shifted to Giancarlo Stanton's beast-mode month (12 HRs, 30 RBI) and a stable five-man rotation that hasn't missed a start.

There also is hope down the road attached to the returns of top-of-the-order igniter Emilio Bonafacio (likely before the All-Star break) and setup man Juan Oviedo (nee Leo Nunez), who's serving an eight-week suspension.

Meanwhile, the Braves have fallen hard and suddenly ? from a 25-15 peak on May 18 to losing eight in a row and nine of 10 ? and are just one of a pack of four NL East title/wild card contenders now (Nobody's buying long-term on the Mets and their -24 run differential with a 28-23 record, are they?)

Mike Minor's rotation spot is in jeopardy, as Kris Medlen was sent back to Triple-A to be stretched out and return as a starter. You also have to wonder how much Chipper Jones (currently on the DL) will be able to contribute the rest of the way, and the Braves are much better with him than without him. At least Freddie Freeman is back and Michael Bourn has turned up the power of late.

The Braves also face the NL East's toughest interleague schedule ? maybe of all 30 teams, for that matter ? including two series with the Yankees.

SL Green Realty Corp. Announces Agreement to Acquire 304 Park ...

NEW YORK, May 31, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) ?
SL Green Realty Corp.

+1.50%

, New York City?s largest commercial
office landlord, today announced it has entered into an agreement to
acquire 304 Park Avenue South, a 215,000-square-foot mixed-use office
and retail building for $135 million, or $628 per square foot, from a
partnership headed by David Berley, Chairman of Walter Samuels Inc. SL
Green will acquire the property with approximately 50% cash and 50%
Operating Partnership units. The transaction is expected to close June
1, 2012.

The property is located on the southwest corner of Park Avenue South and
23rd Street directly across the street from SL Green?s One
Madison Avenue in the Midtown South sub-district, an area that boasts
steadily increasing rents and an office market vacancy of sub-6%. The
property features close proximity to Madison Square Park, Union Square,
Gramercy Park and the Flatiron districts, making it highly desirable for
office and retail tenants alike.

The property is 95% leased to a boutique office tenancy including lead
tenant IMG Models, ranked as the world?s number one model management
firm. Retail tenants include HR Block, Bath Body Works and Time
Warner Entertainment.

Andrew Mathias, President of SL Green, commented, ?We?ve been monitoring
Midtown South carefully looking for acquisition opportunities, however
the consistently tightening vacancy rates and substantial lease activity
in the area have driven cap rates on marketed deals below our target
investment thresholds. This unique opportunity came to us because of the
attractiveness of our Operating Partnership Units and our relationship
with the seller. It?s a classic SL Green investment ? off-market,
potential repositioning, and creating value upon acquisition for both
the Company and the seller. This is the fifth time in the past year we
have used OP units in an acquisition, as sellers recognize the unique
benefits of our currency.?

Walter Samuels represented the seller.

Advisor for the transaction was Doug Harmon of Eastdil Secured.

Romney scuttled, revived Mass. affirmative action

(AP) ? With a few strokes of his pen on a sleepy holiday six months after he became governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney quietly scuttled the state government's long-standing affirmative action policies.

There were no news conferences, no press releases trumpeting Romney's executive order on Bunker Hill Day, June 17, 2003, in the deserted Statehouse. But when civil rights leaders, black lawmakers and other minority groups finally learned of Romney's move two months later, it sparked a public furor.

Romney drew criticism for cutting the enforcement teeth out of the law and rolling back more than two decades of affirmative action advances.

Civil rights leaders said his order stripped minorities, women, disabled people and veterans of equal access protections for state government jobs and replaced them with broad guidelines. They complained Romney hadn't consulted them before making such drastic changes, snubbing the very kind of inclusion he professed to support.

"It was done under the radar and there was a big backlash," said Michael Curry, president of the Boston branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. "It was clear Romney really did not have an appreciation for the affirmative action policies long in place."

Romney responded by creating an advisory panel to recommend changes. But he eventually retreated completely, leaving the state's old policies in place.

The likely Republican presidential nominee's handling of affirmative action may offer insights into how he would deal with civil rights issues if he defeats Barack Obama, the nation's first black president, in the fall election. Romney hasn't talked much about affirmative action on the campaign trail.

Romney's campaign did not respond to requests for comment.

"This is the canary in the coal mine on how he feels about civil rights issues," said Julie Patino, who was deputy director of the state's affirmative action office from 1995 to 1999. "It was a cloaked and unilateral move that eradicated years and years of civil rights advances and history. It was an astonishing act."

Patino said the state's long, tortured history of race relations, including the violence over school busing that tore apart Boston in the 1970s, made Massachusetts' affirmative action laws especially critical.

Massachusetts government for decades has been a patronage haven for well-connected family members and friends of state lawmakers. The informal system of doling out state job spoils was dubbed "Irish affirmative action" in a nod to the powerful sway Irish-American pols in particular have long enjoyed on Beacon Hill.

Romney has said he supports workplace diversity but opposes quotas in hiring, government contracting, school admissions and the like.

"I believe our nation is at its best when people are evaluated as individuals," he said in a 2008 Washington Post issues survey. "I do support encouraging inclusiveness and diversity, and I encourage the disclosure of the numbers of women and minorities in top positions of companies and government ? not to impose a quota but to shine light on the situation."

Responding to the uproar in 2003, Romney insisted he wasn't trying to undercut the state's affirmative action policies. He stressed his commitment to workforce diversity, saying he had simply wanted to broaden, streamline and update the old policies.

"I'm actually very proud of the progress that we're making in the area of affirmative action," he said in August 2003. "We're making a very aggressive effort to change our culture to be more inclusive."

Romney's executive order eliminated the state's Office of Affirmative Action, which required executive agencies to have civil rights officers in charge of monitoring the hiring of minorities, women and people with disabilities. A new state diversity office was created, along with broad goals and guidelines.

Black leaders and civil rights groups said Romney's order lacked enforcement mechanisms and removed penalties for agencies not complying with the state's diversity efforts.

The Boston Globe scolded him in an editorial, saying "Governor Romney sent exactly the wrong message in signing an executive order to revamp the state's affirmative action program, consigning to the trash heap 33 years of guarantees that minorities and women would have equal access to state jobs."

To quell such criticism, Romney appointed a special advisory panel that included minority and civil rights leaders to recommend changes.

"The changes the panel wanted became too hot for the administration to deal with," said Leonard Alkins, who was head of the NAACP's Boston branch during the controversy and was a member of Romney's advisory panel. Alkins said many of the panel's recommendations were aimed at bolstering the policies Romney had abolished.

Romney essentially walked away from the fight, ignoring his own advisory panel. Instead, he had state officials effectively follow the old affirmative action policies he had formally revoked with his executive order.

It wasn't until Deval Patrick, a Democrat who was the state's first black governor, took office in 2007 that the old policies were formally reinstated.

Alkins said Romney never seemed to grasp that the aim of the state's affirmative action policies was to protect people who were wrongfully denied equal rights in the workplace.

"I felt that the governor was out of touch," said Alkins. "He was very uncomfortable with the issue of race and how you would address issues such as affirmative action."

The policies Romney erased with his executive order had been started three decades earlier by Republican former Gov. Frank Sargent and were substantially expanded by Democratic former Gov. Michael Dukakis in 1983. Three Republican governors who directly preceded Romney had left the policies in place.

Hubble reveals unavoidable collision between our galaxy and Andromeda

http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/01/hubble-milky-way-andromeda-collision/

The Hubble team over at NASA has confirmed what it's suspected for a while: that our galaxy is destined for a direct collision / love fest with Andromeda, culminating in the birth of "Milkomeda." But don't go lobbying Virgin Galactic for ring-side tickets just yet because the fireworks won't go off for another four billion years -- and last another two billion after that. Scientists also predict that the earth won't be threatened thanks to the sheer amount of empty space between stars, but we could lose the sun as its flung out to some other part of the new system. You hear that? We could lose the freakin' sun!!

Self-Confidence Is Simple To Create When You Do It This Way | Self ...

Humans have a superb ability to talk themselves out of achieving things. Doubt is the biggest enemy of attainment. But when you talk with high achievers you always discover that they are excellent at speaking themselves into doing things. Positive talk is the secret of their achievements.

The good news is that anybody can talk themselves into being successful. That is the secret of self esteem. All you have to do is talk to yourself in a positive way.

I know that the most vital part of the secret of positive self talk is desired state thinking. To explain if you?d like to experience self-confidence you need to form a state of being where you are feeling that you?re self-confident, where you see yourself as being self-confident and where you hear yourself chatting in a positive, self-confident way all of the time.

It?s because we are ruled by habit that we have the ability to experience difficulties with self-confidence. If you are in the habit of not feeling self-confident then it can be tricky to destroy the habit of not feeling assured. However , we all know that folks can change their habits. Hundreds of thousands of people have given up smoking cigarettes. Millions more have found it possible to lose weight and lead healthy lives. So it is surely possible for you to see that you can easily change the way in which you speak to yourself.

Set yourself a positive exercise of hearing what you are saying and every time that you find yourself speaking in a negative fashion make sure you pull yourself up and change your language. What I?m counseling here is that you really change your language when you?re talking to other people, but also when you are talking to yourself. The most significant is when you?re chatting to yourself, that?s the time when you have to be completely certain that everything you assert is positive and directing you toward the attainment of your ambitions.

Imagine a precision instrument that records the actions, words and feelings of the best performers. Then download that data to a powerful decoder that analyses and codes the behaviour. Transfer the code to your personal control panel so that you can reproduce excellence and self confidence at will. This is how NLP Techniques work. NLP Practitioner David Ferrers will show you how to build your own control panel during business coaching, or at one of his his Sales Success Sales Training workshops.

N-Control Avenger Controller Elite reaches GameStop, sells like gangbusters

N-Control Avenger Controller Elite

We got a look at N-Control's Avenger Controller Elite just last month, and the company is rounding out the hardware's May release with a full-court press on GameStop. The retailer's online store is now selling both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 variants of the controller assist as straightforward, bundle-free $50 units. Company creator David Kotkin also tells us that the add-ons have had an extremely warm reception so far: although the Elite lineup had an unsung launch at GameStop on May 29th, it sold out on day one and is still in tight supply, with Xbox 360 examples currently on backorder as we write this. N-Control may have had a tough road in the past several months, but it looks as though that perseverance has paid off.
