Guinea: 1 dead, more than 100 injured in protests

CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) ? Relatives say one protester was killed as the capital, Conakry, was rocked by two days of anti-government demonstrations in which more than 100 people were injured.

Alpha Amadou Bah said Thursday that his brother, Teela, 22, was stabbed to death in the protests against President Alpha Conde's preparations for legislative elections in May.

State television reported that 130 people were injured in the demonstrations, including more than more than 60 security officials. Officials say security forces fired tear gas at protesters after opposition marchers started throwing stones in Guinea's capital.

Guinea's opposition said that it has withdrawn from the upcoming legislative election set for May 12 because it is unhappy with election preparations.

Conde was elected in 2010, but the vote for the legislature has been delayed.

LG reveals Optimus L3II worldwide rollout starts this week in Brazil

When LG took the wraps off of its Optimus L-Series II family of phones only the L7II had any launch details attached to it. Now the company say its smaller L3II will debut in Brazil this week with other unspecified Central / South American, European, Asian Middle Eastern and African markets on deck. Bucking the bigger-is-better / more-power trend, the 3.2-inch handset contains just a Snapdragon S1 CPU and 512MB of RAM to push its Android Jelly Bean software and a QVGA res screen. If the combination of dual-SIM capability, smaller size and budget-friendly specs appeal to you (and it's headed to your area) check out our hands-on experience from earlier this week at Mobile World Congress for more information.

TuneIn launches TuneIn Live, hopes to encourage radio station discovery through custom UI

DNP TuneIn launches TuneIn Live, hopes to encourage discovery through custom UI

With around 70,000 stations from around the world in its database, TuneIn is rightly one of the more popular radio apps out there. Unfortunately, it also means customers don't always have the easiest time finding what they want, something the Palo Alto firm plans to fix with a new update it's rolling out today. The key new feature is TuneIn Live, which aims to encourage content discovery through a customized interface. By culling eight favorite genres from about 100, users can build a custom tile layout that, when activated, hunts down a station playing the appropriate tune -- be it in Los Angeles, New York or even Iceland.

On top of that, the company introduced integration with Google+ Sign-in so you can immediately place a reminder for scheduled audio events on your Google Calendar. Radio stations broadcasting live sporting events or special in-studio concerts can add "@tunein" to their tweets to prompt TuneIn's servers to add them to the roster. This move towards improved discovery also includes a recently launched Trending feature that lets listeners know the most popular audio content at any given time.

TuneIn marketing director Ryan Polivka and director of product Kristin George told us that the refocus toward discovery will get users addicted to new stations they would never have heard of before. "What's best about radio [instead of algorithms like Pandora] is that there's a human on the other end hand-picking those songs," Polivka said. "Hopefully this will bring a bigger fanbase to those stations, no matter where they are in the world." The new TuneIn features should be available on the iPad app and TuneIn.com today, while other platforms will get them later in the year. For more information about the update, check out the press release and a full gallery of TuneIn Live screenshots after the break.

Samsung Homesync - hands-on with the Android-powered TV box

As a global electronics giant, Samsung has presence in every room in the home, most notably the living room -- the company recently claimed to be selling three TVs every second. And as we all know, Samsung currently dominates the Android smartphone landscape. So it was only a matter of time before the Samsung TV and Android worlds collided.

At Mobile World Congress this week we got our first look at Samsung's Homesync, a 1-terabyte TV box with a Google Play-certified Android front-end. Homesync delivers a full Android experience, with a TouchWiz-based UI that actually scales up really well to the big screen. The main view is a grid of running windows, and you've also got a standard app drawer view, along with on-screen keys you can hit using your pointer.

Home Improvements That Yield Real Returns | Here and Now

Extensive remodeling projects can be disruptive, time-consuming and most of all expensive. However, it doesn?t always have to be the case. There are a few upgrades that can not only dramatically improve your home feel and look, but also come cheap.

When you try to sell your home, it?s a good idea to spruce it up a little bit to sweeten the deal. Luckily, you don?t have to spend big time to achieve great results. There are inexpensive projects that can yield substantial ROI. You can find five best picks that avoid hassle and are relatively quick to finish.

New Floors

This one isn?t fast or cheap but compared to kitchen or bathroom updates costs almost to nothing while its effect on your home is enormous and lasting. This is an investment that is worthwhile. No matter if you install new hard floor or wall-to-wall carpet. Your home will look completely changed afterwards. However, this isn?t an easy DIY project and it?s best to hire a contractor.

Kitchen and Bath Hardware Renovation

Unlike installing new floors, changing few handles and hinges can make your kitchen cabinets look like new. Additionally, you can change their front doors inexpensively. For your bathroom you can put new toilet paper dispensers and towel racks.

Exterior Door Replacement

What?s a better way to say that you have improved a home than a new front door? Visitors will be able to see it from afar and notice its fresh and inviting look. Standard front doors can be purchased in most home improvement stores and have installation options for free.

Wall Painting

You can always count on a fresh coat of paint to refresh your home and make it more appealing. It?ll do wonders for your home and its value. Painted areas like walls and ceiling get dull and marked after years of use. Another coat of paint will not only refresh them but also provide a layer of protection. Painting is a truly DIY project provided that you get your colors right, a few tools and are really patient type of person.

Deep Cleaning

Actually this project is consistently voted as number among real estate agents and homeowners alike as the most successful and least expensive way to spruce up your home and increase its value before you listed it on the market.

Superbugs may have a soft spot, after all

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

The overuse of antibiotics has created strains of bacteria resistant to medication, making the diseases they cause difficult to treat, or even deadly. But now a research team at the University of Rochester has identified a weakness in at least one superbug that scientists may be able to medically exploit.

Biologists Gloria Culver at Rochester and Keith Connolly, now at Harvard University, thought one key to stopping the bacteria may lie with proteins, so they studied the mechanism behind the development of bacterial ribosomes?the cell's protein-manufacturing machine.

"We targeted the ribosomes in our research because cells and organisms can't live if they don't make proteins, and they can't make proteins if their ribosomes aren't functioning properly." said Culver.

Culver and Connolly specifically worked with cultures of E. coli, a bacteria commonly found in the intestines. While E. coli is usually harmless, some strains are resistant to antibiotics and can cause serious food poisoning.

They discovered that two proteins already present in E. coli cells?RbfA and KsgA?need to be in balance with each other in order for ribosomes to function. If those proteins are present in the wrong concentrations, the ribosomes will not mature properly and will be unable to produce proteins, leading to the death of the cells. Their findings are being published this week in the journal Molecular Microbiology.

Culver said with the discovery that KsgA and RbfA.must be balanced for the cells to function properly, the next goal is to determine an effective way to disrupt that balance.

Crucially, RbfA does not exist in humans. "That may make it possible," Culver said," to kill E. coli without having a harmful effect on people."

Eric Brown, a professor of biochemistry and biomedical sciences at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont., calls their work creative and scholarly. "Ribosome assembly represents a rich target for much needed antibacterial drugs to treat drug-resistant infections," said Brown, "and this work offers new and important insights into the process."

Culver explained the role the proteins play in ribosome maturation. A healthy ribosome is made up of two compartments?or subunits?that must come together only when each one is mature. An overabundance of RbfA hurries the process along, which could result in an ineffective structure. The job of the KsgA is to bind with the smaller of the compartments, preventing the formation of the ribosome until both parts are ready.

Culver says RbfA and KsgA belong to "the chicken or the egg" category of microbiology. While they're essential to the development of ribosomes, the ribosomes themselves are needed to create proteins, including the RbfA and KsgA. She calls it an ongoing and intriguing question for biologists.

(AP) ? Skeptical Syrian opposition leaders agreed Monday to attend an international conference in Rome after first threatening to boycott the session that was to be the centerpiece of Secretary of State John Kerry's first overseas mission in his new job.

Opposition leaders had protested what they see as inaction by other nations in the face of violence from Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime.

Kerry not only made a public plea at a joint news conference Monday with British Foreign Secretary William Hague, he also called Moaz Khatib, leader of the Syrian Opposition Council, "to encourage him to come to Rome," a senior U.S. official said. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly on the matter, described the conversation as "good" but declined to offer more detail.

Spokesman Walid al-Bunni said the council had decided to send a delegation to Rome after all.

Al-Bunni told Al-Arabiya TV the decision was made based on guarantees al-Khatib heard from western diplomats that the conference would be different and that the opposition would receive real commitments this time. "We will go and we will see if the promises are different this time," he said.

After speaking with Khatib, Kerry flew to Berlin from London, the first stop of his first trip as secretary of state ? a hectic nine-country dash through Europe and the Middle East.

Kerry had also dispatched his top Syrian envoy to Cairo in hopes of convincing opposition leaders that their participation is critical to addressing questions from potential donors and securing additional aid from the United States and Europe.

"We are determined that the Syrian opposition is not going to be dangling in the wind, wondering where the support is, if it is coming," Kerry told reporters in London after meeting British Prime Minister David Cameron and Hague. "We are not going to let the Syrian opposition not have its ability to have its voice properly heard in this process."

Vice President Joe Biden also reached out Monday in a phone call to Khatib. Biden commended him and other members of the Syrian Opposition Coalition for their courage. He also emphasized President Barack Obama's commitment to a post-Assad government that protects the rights of all its citizens, according to a description of the call provided by the White House.

For his part, Hague said the violence in Syria, especially recent scud missile attacks on the city of Aleppo, was unacceptable and that the west's current position could not be sustained while an "appalling injustice" is being done to Syrian citizens.

"In the face of such murder and threat of instability, our policy cannot stay static as the weeks go by," Hague told reporters, standing beside Kerry. "We must significantly increase support for the Syrian opposition. We are preparing to do just that."

Kerry agreed.

"We are not coming to Rome simply to talk, we are coming to Rome to talk about next steps," Kerry said, adding that he was sympathetic to opposition complaints that they were not getting the support they need to defend themselves against the Assad regime or oust him from power.

"I am very sensitive to that frustration," recalling that as a U.S. senator he was one of several who pushed the administration to consider military aid to the Syrian opposition.

"But I am the new secretary of state ... and the president of the United States has sent me here and sent me to this series of meetings and in Rome because he is concerned about the course of events.

"This moment is ripe for us to be considering what more we can do," he said, adding that if the opposition wants results, "join us" in Rome.

Meanwhile, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said Monday the Assad regime was ready to hold talks with opposition leaders, the first time that a high-ranking Syrian official has stated publicly that the government would meet with the opposition. Al-Moallem made his comments after meeting in Moscow with Russian officials.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said Moallem's remarks appeared positive but expressed caution about the seriousness of the offer.

"I don't know their motivations, other than to say they continue to rain down horrific attacks on their own people," Ventrell told reporters. "So that speaks pretty loudly and clearly."

If the Assad regime is serious, he said, it should inform the U.N. peace envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi of its readiness for talks. Ventrell said the Assad regime hasn't yet done that.

Obama administration officials have debated whether the U.S. should arm the rebels, with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey having said they urged such a course of action. The White House has been unwilling to do so for fears the weapons could end up in the wrong hands. Currently, the U.S. provides only non-lethal support and humanitarian aid.

The United Nations says at least 70,000 people have been killed in Syria's 2-year civil war, which began as an uprising against Assad's regime.

Kerry said the Syrian people "deserve better" than the violence currently gripping their country as he stood alongside Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague.

Republicans Fake Obama Corruption but PA?s 3 Sisters Conviction Shows How Corrupt the GOP Is

more from Jason Easley

jail-cell

In the fantasy world of Republicans President Obama is corrupt, but once again the story of the three very corrupt, powerful, Republican, and very convicted Orie sisters reminds of us which party has the corruption problem.

It is not very often that a state Supreme Court Justice and a state senator get convicted of campaign corruption, but it is even more rare when it occurs in two separate trials and the two are sisters.

The sisters Justice Joan Orie Melvin, older sister Janine Orie, and former state senator Jane Orie have all been convicted of public corruption for a scheme that used state employees to do campaign work. It a story that involves the Ories using a psychic who claimed that angels whispered answers to her, and lots of allegations that the downfall of the Orie dynasty was a plot by a Democratic prosecutor.

The Ories demonstrated that they were good Republicans the moment they were led away on chains by blaming their convictions on a Democrat.

According to WTAE,

The Ories have argued the prosecution is the result of a political vendetta by Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr., a Democrat, who has repeatedly denied ulterior motives.

When the investigation first became public in late 2009, the sisters claimed they were being targeted because Zappala?s family has interests in legalized gambling, which the Ories opposed expanding in Pennsylvania.

The allegations grew uglier, when Melvin ? after it was known Sen. Orie was being investigated but before the justice was charged ? called for an audit of two child care centers that paid kickbacks to two judges in northeastern Pennsylvania?s Luzerne County who sent troubled youths to the facilities. The facilities were co-owned by Gregory Zappala, the prosecutor?s brother, who was never charged in the scheme and has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

Republicans always claim that Democrats are corrupt and/or corrupting something. This is their standard excuse for voter suppression and voter ID laws. It is their excuse for destroying the social safety net, as in, ?welfare queens and corrupt African Americans abusing food stamps.? It is even their excuse for their opposition to gun control, ?We need our guns to defend against the tyranny of the government.?

What the Orie convictions remind us of again is that Republicans talk about Democrats being corrupt, but the Republicans are the ones who are committing the crimes. There is Scott Walker?s misuse of staff for his gubernatorial campaign in Wisconsin, or a Maggie Brooks who used government-contracted laborers? work on her political campaign. The kind of corruption the Orie sisters were convicted of appears to be the norm in Republican politics.

The next time some Republican tries to tell you tall tales about ?Obama?s corruption? remind them of the Orie sisters and all the other Republicans who have really been convicted of the crimes that they accuse the president of committing.

Republicans should know all about political corruption. After all, they?re the ones doing it most of it.

Five Things ?The Sessions? Gets Right: Sex and Disability on Screen ...

So much of criticism, feminist critique included, hinges on highlighting what is wrong. In the case of film reviews, we so often ask what on-screen narratives convey about difference and the status quo. For an industry the prides itself on innovation, misogyny occupies the limelight so often that one might even call it formulaic. (Epic fail, Hollywood.) The same is true of representations of other kinds of difference, be they differences of race or religion, nationality or ability.

This is why it?s so startling, so exciting, when a film that garners critical acclaim does many things well. From the point of view of film watchers looking for a great story, there?s a lot to love about The Sessions. But even from a critical vantage point, The Sessions stands out as a film that gets so many things right.

1. Disability does not mitigate one?s multifaceted humanity.

markMark O?Brien was a poet, a Berkeley graduate student, a community organizer, a cultural critic, and a journalist. Mark O?Brien was hilarious and vulnerable and generous. He believed in treating all labor, especially that of his caretakers, as intrinsically valued. He knew that the ways we treat disability say something very ugly about our culture. Mark O?Brien was a risk taker?venturing into publishing and human connection and sex. He craved love and success. He knew that both depended on self-determination.

At its core, The Sessions is a portrait of a relationship between a surrogate partner and her client, but through The Sessions, we come to know Mark O?Brien (John Hawkes) as layered and contradictory. In sharp contrast to representations of disability in popular culture that tend to rely on a pity trope that emphasizes dependency or an overcoming trope that overstresses rugged individualism, The Sessions does not reduce Mark O?Brien to post-polio syndrome. To be sure, Mark O?Brien self-identifies as disabled, but here disability shapes a multifaceted human experience.

Consider that in their first meeting, Cheryl Cohen Greene (Helen Hunt) is clearly curious and perhaps surprised to see Mark?s body. One she describes in her memoir An Intimate Life as, ?slight, only four-foot-seven and around seventy pounds.? Critically though, Mark?s disabled body does not elicit pity from Cheryl. When Mark points to some money, Cheryl?s compensation for her work, and then asks, ?That was the wrong way to start off?? Cheryl replies, ?It really was.? As opposed to an equivocating or patronizing response, Cheryl engages with Mark as an adult, one who can be called out for denigrating (albeit unintentionally) her labor. Scenes show Mark shopping for his own clothes, hiring caregivers, writing. By depicting Mark?s life, this film version of a real-life man pulses.

Perhaps most significantly, it is Mark who tells the story first. We see Mark start his work on writing what presumably became his renowned 1990 essay ?On Seeing a Sex Surrogate.?

2. Disability and sexuality are not mutually exclusive dimensions of human experience.

The Sessions is a not a film about sexuality or disability. Rather, sexuality and disability are inextricably linked throughout. In addition to the social stigmas and structural barriers directed towards disability, those with disabilities are routinely perceived as non-sexual. By contrast, Mark?s sexual desires are articulated from the outset, and Mark?s sexuality is an active force in the narrative. While The Sessions may revolve around Mark?s pursuit to have his first sexual encounter, Mark is represented as a sexual being with desires and fantasies that pre-exist his encounters with Cheryl. Given the ways in which the equation of non-sexuality and disability operate to infantilize people, depicting Mark as always already a sexual being is groundbreaking.

3. Sex and intimacy that happen outside of marital bonds, long-term relationship, or enduring partnership can be transformative.

Most reviews of The Sessions devote an inordinate word count to unpacking the differences between sex surrogates and sex workers. Defending surrogacy against associations with ?prostitution? is tinged with all sorts of moralist righteousness. It also helps to situate surrogacy as a ?helping profession.? In portraying the complex and nuanced dimensions of Cheryl and Mark?s connection, The Sessions tells the story of an intimate relationship that leaves both parties changed. And yet, the film does not culminate in marriage or even love, at least not long-lasting love. Rather, first comes financial transaction, then comes sex, then comes greater self-knowledge. There are no wedding bells here or even romantic references to possible domesticity. sessions

It?s important, too, that the film depicts Cheryl?s relationship with her husband. Perhaps because their marriage has reached that moment of routine predictability, the marital bond appears less intimate than the relationship between Cheryl and Mark. I?m not suggesting that there?s nothing there, but what I am suggesting is that in juxtaposing these two relationships, the film challenges the notion that sex that happens a few times, for pay, or between relative strangers never has meaning. In The Sessions, it?s precisely this kind of sex and intimacy that has radically transformative potential. It?s interesting to note that reviews that invest so much in qualifying surrogacy as not sex work ignore how?sex work fulfills emotional needs in ways not dissimilar to surrogacy.

4. Religion and spirituality are spaces where people work out sexuality in multifaceted ways.

Catholic imagery?stained glass windows, a Eucharistic consecration, the Confessional?figures prominently in the film, but interestingly Catholic caricature does not.? Since the sex abuse scandal, the relationship of the Catholic Church to sexuality is often grotesquely depicted as all shame, pathology, and brimstone. Without a doubt, the Catholic Church is responsible for constructing an infrastructure that suppresses adult sexuality and produces unconscionable sexual victimization. But my own admittedly lapsed Catholicism speaks to a Church with a more dynamic, imaginative relationship to sex. While Catholic doctrine may discourage masturbation and stigmatize queerness, the Catholics of my upbringing?specifically the teachers and nuns and priests who staffed my Catholic schools?had subtle ways of conveying that idea that rules, especially those related to sexuality, might be considered suggestive rather than compulsory.

doc509ab63d4c1042862136991?My penis speaks to me, Father Brendan,? Mark reveals to his Priest, played by William H. Macy. Mark attends Mass daily and regularly seeks out confession. Not surprisingly, his decision to see a surrogate is one he wrestles with spiritually. Ultimately, it is Father Brendan who tells Mark, ?Go for it.? This is not the Catholicism of popular caricature. Rather, the relationship between Father Brendan and Mark O?Brien, while grounded in a shared denomination, is forged as together they wrestle with moral questions complicated by lived experience.

5. Sex is about communication and intimacy?and it?s about sex.

What comes through in The Sessions is something Cheryl Cohen Greene emphasizes in her book?successful surrogacy results in the formation of skills that can be used in future relationships. Clients, as Mark does, learn how to ask questions and express needs; they learn how to talk and think about sex. But The Sessions does not purport, as so much pop-sexuality education does, that sex has very little to do with what happens between the sheets (or on the kitchen floor) and everything to do with what happens between the ears.

By contrast, sex in The Sessions is carnal and embodied. As a surrogate, Cheryl incites Mark to pay attention to his penis and to gauge what feels good. The Sessions features nudity, though it is hardly pornographic, and yet sex is not sanitized. ?Cumming? figures prominently, and what emerges is a representation of sexuality that hovers between ?making love? and ?fucking,? while appreciating what both acts have to offer.

Of his iron lung, Mark O?Brien writes, ?It?s huge and ugly and yellow but it works.? Sex is messy and scary and fun. It?s a human need and want and hope for folks who identify as disabled and those who are unconscious of their own temporary able-bodiedness. Likely nominee Helen Hunt will not win an Academy Award for her performance, but The Sessions wins as a widely consumed cultural artifact that disrupts in powerful ways how we think about both disability and sexuality.

Andover Stories: Town of Joiners, part I ? News ? Andover ...

This is the first of a two-part story.

French political thinker and historian Alexis de Tocqueville traveled to America in 1835, publishing his observations in the text ?Democracy in America.? Key to this volume was the way in which Americans recognized the distinctiveness of their voluntary tradition. Tocqueville argued that a society?s propensity for individualism could have either positive or negative consequences.

In America, efforts in this regard became the country?s strength: ?Through associating, the coming together of people for mutual purpose, both public and private, Americans are able to overcome selfish desires, thus making both a self-conscious and active political society and a vibrant civil society functioning independently from the state.?

German sociologist Max Weber in 1911 described the United States as ?the association-land par excellence.? In 1944, Arthur M. Schlesinger coined the phrase ?a nation of joiners? to refer to the phenomenon.

Andover is certainly no exception to this trend. And nowhere have ties been stronger or more influential than within the grand halls of its fraternal organizations. A study of lodges in town shows that members are drawn together by three things: their belief in a Supreme Being, their bond of brotherhood and their policies of charitable acts. Other organizations come together by sharing a similar culture, like interests or similar occupations. All groups, however, are joined by their commitment to service in their home community.

Andover?s town directory of 1893 lists the following active lodges: St. Mathew?s Lodge of Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, the Grand Army of the Republic, W.F. Bartlett Relief Corps, Royal Arcanum, the Indian Ridge Council, the Andover Grange (Patrons of Husbandry), Andover Wheelman, and the Ancient Order of United Workmen.

By 1897 additional organizations surfaced: the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Sons of Veterans, and the United Order of Pilgrim Fathers. The Knights of Columbus was organized in 1905. Following these were the Carpenter?s Union, the Knights of Pythias (1913), and the Independent Order of Good Templars. Coming late to the game were the Lions Club in 1930 and the Andover Lodge of Elks, formed in 1961.

Several lodges were also formed to preserve the culture of its homeland. Clan MacDonald and Clan Johnston celebrated their Scottish heritage; the Ancient Order of Hibernians celebrated the Irish; American Hellenic Progressive Association celebrated Greek culture, and the Sons of Italy brought together Italian-Americans. Ballardvale had a German Club as early as 1885.

Not to be left out, early on the women of town formed an important part of these groups. The Women?s Relief Corps was an auxiliary of the Grand Army. The Rebekahs was a sister organization to the Odd Fellows, forming in 1904. The Pythian Sisters organized in 1914 and the Eastern Star, sisterhood of the Masons, was founded in 1922. Clan Johnston sponsored a Ladies? Auxiliary.

Halls and meeting spaces for these groups were scattered throughout downtown and the area. The Masons gathered on the third floor of the old bank building for most of the 1800s. Other lodges met in spaces in downtown businesses, including the Musgrove Building. Here, at various times, were the VFW and Royal Arcanum. The Buchan & McNally Building, 24-30 Park St., hosted at one time the Knights of Columbus and the United Workmen. The GAR Hall was on Essex Street, and the Grange Hall, originally built near the entrance to West Parish Cemetery, eventually settled on Shawsheen Road in the space behind West Parish Church.

In 1923, six fraternal organizations purchased the three-story Morrison Block on Park Street, renovating it and naming it the Andover Fraternal Building. These lodges were the Odd Fellows, Clan Johnston, Knights of Pythias, Indian Ridge Rebekah Lodge, the Clan Auxiliary and the Pythian Sisters.

The remodeled space included a ?large lodge room, banquet hall, regalia room, card room, model kitchen and toilets.? This structure was torn down in 1965 to make way for the new business block at 40 Park St.

With the number of citizens actively involved in these organizations, it?s no wonder their influence spilled over into the running of the town. Many of the town fathers were members of several groups, but none more so than Selectman Frank Hardy. At various times, Mr. Hardy showed membership in the Odd Fellows, the Indian Ridge Rebekah Lodge, the Royal Arcanum, the Andover Grange and the Andover Masons.

It was this last group ? the Masons ? that reflected strong ties to the business community and, by extension, strong influence over town politics. Of the 85 selectmen since 1855, over 30 percent have held memberships in Masonic Lodges. The Square and Compass Club, originally located at the corner of High and Elm streets, was a social club for Master Masons. Long-time Town Moderator Jim Doherty shared a once popularly-held belief: ?Decisions on town government were made Saturday night at the Square & Compass Club, finalized at South Church the next morning, and executed at the selectmen?s meeting Monday night.?

Northam Platinum H1 headlines EPS falls 30.1 percent

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Northam Platinum, one of South Africa's smaller platinum producers, reported a 30.1 percent fall in first-half headline earnings as finance and tax charges swelled.

Headline earnings per share for the six months to end December were almost a third lower at 36.3 cents from 51.9 cents in the first half of its previous year.

Headline EPS is the key measure of profitability in South Africa and strips out certain one-off and non-trading items.

Production of precious metals in concentrates climbed 6.5 percent to 157,183 ounces and precious metals sales grew 4.4 percent to 177,655 ounces.

Northam managed to escape last year's violent labour unrest unscathed but its future will be impacted by the crisis in the South African platinum sector.

"Against the background of a volatile labour relations climate in the South African mining sector, Northam's results reflect a sustained operational recovery at the company's Zondereinde mine," Northam said.

Threats of a worldwide shortage of platinum group metal (PGM) supplies from South Africa helped to stem the decline in the dollar prices of PGMs.

The weakening of the South African rand against the US dollar also played a hand in improving the rand basket price, which helped push up revenue.

While social and economic uncertainty is expected to dominate the platinum industry's agenda this year the company said it would deliver an improved operational performance compared to the previous year.

Northam did not declare an interim dividend, choosing instead to ensure it has enough cash for the 4 billion rand development of its flagship Booysendal mine.

It also wants to cushion itself against the uncertainty in the South African mining industry.

The company's shares have gained 20.86 percent in the past 12 months, while the JSE's Platinum Index has fallen 13.10 percent.

A massive decline in earnings have been reported across the platinum sector as the larger producers struggle to regain their footing after their operations were brought to their knees by extended illegal strikes late last year.

More than 50 people were killed in labour unrest last year.

Honey, It's Electric: Bees Sense Charge On Flowers

Flowers are nature's ad men. They'll do anything to attract the attention of the pollinators that help them reproduce. That means spending precious energy on bright pigments, enticing fragrances and dazzling patterns.

Now, scientists have found another element that contributes to flowers' brand: their distinct electric field.

Flowers taylor their displays towards the sensory capabilities of their pollinators. Bees can see visible and ultraviolet light, they have precise olfactory receptors, and now we know they can also detect electric fields.

  • Fragrance
  • Electric

Anne Leonard, who studies bees at the University of Nevada, says our understanding of pollinator-flower communication has been expanding for decades.

"Flowers do a lot of things you might not expect," Leonard says. "We observe they have these distinct bright beautiful, colors, patterns, scents."

But we don't often stop to consider that this incredible display is all an attempt to attract bees and other pollinators. These displays don't just consist of things humans notice. There are also patterns in the ultraviolet spectrum, petal temperatures and textures and shapes.

"We've found that by producing these combinations of sensory stimuli, the plant basically makes its flowers easier for the bee to learn and remember," Leonard says.

That means the bee can forage more efficiently and flowers are more likely to be pollinated.

"This is a magnificent interaction where you have an animal and a plant and they both want this to go as well as possible," says Gregory Sutton of the University of Bristol in the U.K. "The flowers are trying to make themselves look as different as possible. This is to establish the flower's bland."

Sutton and a team of researchers led by Daniel Robert have just uncovered a whole new layer to flower brands.

"We found that flowers can use electric fields," Sutton says.

That's right ? electric fields. It turns out flowers have a slight negative charge relative to the air around them. Bumblebees have a charge, too.

"When bees are flying through the air, just the friction of the air and the friction of the body parts on one another causes the bee to become positively charged," Sutton says.

It's like shuffling across a carpet in wool socks. When a positively charged bee lands on a flower, the negatively charged pollen grains naturally stick to it. The Bristol team wondered if bees were aware of this electrostatic interaction.

So, the designed an experiment ? one described in this week's Science magazine. The researchers built a small arena full of fake flowers. Each flower was simple ? a stalk with a small steel dish at the top. Half of the "flowers" held delicious sugar water. The other half held quinine, a substance that bees find bitter and disgusting.

When bumblebees were allowed explored this false flower patch, they moved around randomly. They chose to land on sweet flowers just about as often as bitter flowers.

But when the sweet flowers carried a small charge, the bees learned pretty quickly to choose the charged flowers. And when the electric charge was removed? They went back to their random foraging.

The bees had recognized the electric field, and had learned to use it to find sweet flowers. But that's not all.

"In the seconds just before the bee lands, there is electrical activity in the plant," Sutton says.

The plant's electric field is changed by the proximity of that positively charged bee. And once the bee leaves, the field stays changed for 100 seconds or so. That's long enough for the altered field to serve as a warning for the next bee that buzzes by. She won't stop to investigate a flower that's already been visited.

Bullied children can suffer lasting psychological harm as adults

Feb. 20, 2013 ? Bullied children grow into adults who are at increased risk of developing anxiety disorders, depression and suicidal thoughts, according to a study led by researchers at Duke Medicine.

The findings, based on more than 20 years of data from a large group of participants initially enrolled as adolescents, are the most definitive to date in establishing the long-term psychological effects of bullying.

Published online Feb. 20, 2013, in JAMA Psychiatry, the study belies a common perception that bullying, while hurtful, inflicts a fleeting injury that victims outgrow.

"We were surprised at how profoundly bullying affects a person's long-term functioning," said William E. Copeland, PhD, assistant clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University and lead author of the study. "This psychological damage doesn't just go away because a person grew up and is no longer bullied. This is something that stays with them. If we can address this now, we can prevent a whole host of problems down the road."

A previous longitudinal study of bullied children, conducted in Finland, found mixed results, concluding that boys had few lasting problems, while girls suffered more long-term psychological harm. That study, however, relied on registry data in the health system that didn't fully capture psychiatric records.

Copeland and colleagues had a much richer data set. Using the Great Smoky Mountain Study, the research team tapped a population-based sample of 1,420 children ages 9, 11 and 13 from 11 counties in western North Carolina. Initially enrolled in 1993, the children and their parents or caregivers were interviewed annually until the youngsters turned 16, and then periodically thereafter.

At each assessment until age 16, the child and caregiver were asked, among other things, whether the child had been bullied or teased or had bullied others in the three months immediately prior to the interview.

A total of 421 child or adolescent participants -- 26 percent of the children -- reported being bullied at least once; 887 said they suffered no such abuse. Boys and girls reported incidents at about the same rate. Nearly 200 youngsters, or 9.5 percent, acknowledged bullying others; 112 were bullies only, while 86 were both bullies and victims.

Of the original 1,420 children, more than 1,270 were followed up into adulthood. The subsequent interviews included questions about the participants' psychological health.

As adults, those who said they had been bullied, plus those who were both victims and aggressors, were at higher risk for psychiatric disorders compared with those with no history of being bullied. The young people who were only victims had higher levels of depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, generalized anxiety, panic disorder and agoraphobia.

Those who were both bullies and victims had higher levels of all anxiety and depressive disorders, plus the highest levels of suicidal thoughts, depressive disorders, generalized anxiety and panic disorder. Bullies were also at increased risk for antisocial personality disorder.

The researchers were able to sort out confounding factors that might have contributed to psychiatric disorders, including poverty, abuse and an unstable or dysfunctional home life.

"Bullying is potentially a problem for bullies as well as for victims," said senior author E. Jane Costello, PhD, associate director of research at Duke's Center for Child and Family Policy. "Bullying, which we tend to think of as a normal and not terribly important part of childhood, turns out to have the potential for very serious consequences for children, adolescents and adults."

Costello and Copeland said they would continue their analysis, with future studies exploring the role sexual orientation plays in bullying and victimization.

In addition to Costello and Copeland, study authors include Adrian Angold of Duke and Dieter Wolke of the University of Warwick, Coventry, England.

The work received support from the National Institute of Mental Health (MH63970, MH63671, and MH48085); the National Institute on Drug Abuse (DA/MH11301); the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation; and the William T. Grant Foundation.

Benefits of Playing Sports - Shaka Smart Basketball Camps LLC

February 19, 2013

Whether it?s on a school team, recreational league or in the summer during Shaka Smart Basketball Camps, playing a sport has numerous benefits.

Most people already know the physical benefits kids achieve with athletic activity, such as cutting the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. There are also social and psychological benefits of getting involved in athletics while in school.

Apparently most high school students (and their parents) agree! More than 7.6 million high school students?that?s more than 55 percent?played sports during the 2010-2011 school year, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations.

High school athletes who regularly play sports do a better job of avoiding negative activities. They are less likely to abuse drugs or smoke, based on findings in the National Household Survey of Drug Abuse. Studies also show that, in addition to avoiding drugs and cigarettes, female athletes have a lower risk of breast cancer and depression. They are also less likely to engage in sexual activity at a young age and show more interest in education, according to The Women?s Sports Foundation Report. Other research has shown that playing sports also improves grades, standardized test scores and school attendance.

Many speculate that being involved in on a team or playing for an organization gives students a sense of pride and builds self-esteem. Coaches and teammates often provide positive reinforcement for healthy lifestyle choices, such as eating well and getting enough rest prior to competition. This likely reduces the influence of negative peer pressure. Also, if playing on a school-sponsored team, grades must be kept at a certain level. This incentive often keeps athletes? heads in the game as well as in the books!

Of course, basketball is only one of the sports available for student athletes. There are numerous options offered at schools, recreation and parks and other leagues, including baseball, golf, hockey, tennis, track and field, swimming, soccer, wrestling, gymnastics and lacrosse. Also, keep in mind that playing multiple sports will exercise different muscles and use a wider range of skills.
