Move over iPhone: AT&T to spend up to $150M on Lumia 900 campaign

AT&T previously said it planned its biggest launch ever for the just-released Nokia Lumia 900, even bigger than the iPhone. Now we have a figure that shows AT&T is actually putting up serious dough: $150 million, according to Ad Age.

In a weird move, AT&T launched the Lumia 900 yesterday on Easter Sunday when many AT&T stores were closed. But even with that, AT&T is at least looking to push this phone heavily for a few months with up to $150 million dedicated for its campaign. Ad Age notes that AT&T spent $3 billion on advertising in 2010, so $150 million on a single campaign won?t hurt its bottom line much.

The Lumia 900 has the best chance of bringing Microsoft?s still-young Windows Phone 7 OS into the hands on Americans, who thus far haven?t been attracted. Our own Devindra Hardawar is bullish on the Lumia 900, calling it the best $100 phone on the market. For specs, the Lumia 900 features a huge 4.3-inch screen, LTE 4G connectivity, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a front-facing camera, and an updated version of Windows Phone Mango (7.5).

Thus far, the biggest drawback for consumers using the Windows Phone OS instead of iOS or Android is apps. While there are 70,000 apps or so in the Windows Marketplace, the competition has many more apps and more recognizable titles. To remedy that, Microsoft is writing checks to developers to help its app store catch up.

Monday, April 09, 2012

President Amadou Toumani Toure of Mali has formally resigned as part of a deal with coup leaders to end the crisis gripping the West African state.

International mediator Djibril Bassole, Burkina Faso's foreign minister, confirmed a letter of resignation had been submitted.

The resignation paves the way for the coup leaders to step aside and the parliamentary speaker to take over.

Mali has been grappling with a separatist uprising in the north.

It intensified after the coup by army officers on 22 March. Mr Bassole, who represents the West African regional bloc Ecowas, met Mr Toure in the Malian capital, Bamako.

"We have just received the formal letter of resignation from President Amadou Toumani Toure," he told reporters.

"We will now contact the competent authorities so that the vacancy of the presidency would be established and so that they take the appropriate measures."
Under the agreement, the Malian parliamentary speaker, Dioncounda Traore, will take over as interim president and govern with a transitional administration until elections are held.

Once he has been sworn in, Mr Traore has 40 days to organise this poll, the deal stipulates.

Mr Traore, who has been in Burkina Faso since the coup was launched, said as he left for Bamako: "I am leaving for Mali with my heart full of hope.

Witness: Islamist fighters execute Tuareg in Mali

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) ? Residents in Mali attempting to flee the northern city of Gao, occupied for the past week by rival rebel factions, said they saw Islamist fighters cut the throat of a gunman, who is assumed to belong to the secular rebel group.

The incident appears to show that the Islamists are asserting their control in Gao, the largest city in the north, a region as large as France that fell to the Tuareg rebels a week ago in the aftermath of a coup in Bamako, Mali's capital.

Dramane Maiga, an employee of a transport company, said a bus loaded with fleeing residents attempted on Sunday to leave Gao, located more than 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) from Bamako. The bus was driven off the road by Tuareg fighters who wanted to rob the occupants, and who are assumed to belong to the secular faction, known as the National Movement for the Liberation of the Azawad, or NMLA.

The NMLA declared the independence of the nation of Azawad on Friday, but it remains unclear if they have the upper hand in the three largest cities in the north, or if an Islamist faction attempting to impose Shariah law has greater sway. Maiga said the Islamists had handed out a hotline number and encouraged residents to call if they were in trouble, apparently in an effort to instill confidence in the local population.

He said that as soon as the bus was driven off the road by a group of four Tuareg gunmen at the exit to Gao, people began calling the hotline. The Islamists arrived 30 minutes later, and an argument ensued.

Maiga said that he and everyone else on the bus saw the Islamists cut the throat of one of the Tuareg fighters, while shouting "Allah Akbar," or "God is Great," in Arabic.

There is growing international concern the Islamist faction is gaining ground in northern Mali. The Ansar Dine faction which is at the fore of the fighting is believed to be providing cover for an al-Qaida offshoot, known as al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM. Their growing footprint in the vast northern stretches of Mali is especially worrying. AQIM bankrolls its operation by kidnapping foreigners and is holding French, Italian and Spanish nationals.

In the ancient northern town of Timbuktu, Mayor Ousmane Halle said the Islamists had taken over the downtown core of the city, while the NMLA was camped out at the airport.

"I do not know who our master is," he told The Associated Press this week.

The Tuaregs have been attempting to claim control of the north of Mali since at least 1958, two years before Mali's independence from France. That year, Tuareg elders wrote a letter addressed to the French president, requesting that they be given a separate nation. Mali's north where the lighter-skinned Tuaregs live was instead made part of the same nation as the country's south, where the darker-skinned Bambaras control the capital and the government.

They have fought numerous wars to try to wrest the north free, but it was not until the chaos caused by a March 21 coup in the capital that they were able to make significant gains. In the confusion that followed the military takeover, the rebel factions moved on the three largest cities, which fell over a three-day period last weekend.

The military chiefs of 13 of Mali's neighbors have held several meetings to plan a military invasion to take back the north. France has promised technical and logistical support.

Omar Suleiman, Mubarak's no. 2, enters Egypt's presidential race

Omar Suleiman, the right-hand man of former President Hosni Mubarak, announced today he will enter the race to become Egypt?s new leader after Mr. Mubarak was forced out by a massive uprising last year.

Mr. Suleiman's decision raises the possibility that, one year after an uprising that was spurred in part by the Mubarak regime?s brutality, torture, and oppression, one of the architects of that repression could become Egypt?s first post-Mubarak president. ??

Some see his candidacy as a response by Egypt?s military rulers to the Muslim Brotherhood?s recent decision to field a presidential candidate ? a decision that broke a year-long promise to stay out of the race. Omar Ashour, a visiting fellow at the Brookings Doha Center in Qatar, says Suleiman?s candidacy raises the possibility that the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), which is currently ruling Egypt, may rig the elections to favor the former intelligence chief.

?His nomination is a bad sign,? says Dr. Ashour. ?It's a sign [SCAF] may support him and commit fraud. ? it seems the rift between [SCAF] and the Brotherhood is wider than many estimated.?

The Muslim Brotherhood, whose political party won nearly 50 percent of the seats in recent parliamentary elections, said in recent weeks that the military had threatened to rig the elections in favor of a military-supported candidate. The group?s leaders said the Brotherhood was forced to nominate a presidential candidate to thwart threats to Egypt?s democratic transition, in what many interpreted as a power struggle between the two dominant forces in Egyptian politics ? the Islamist Brotherhood and the secular military.

In a statement announcing his candidacy, Suleiman promised to ?complete the goals of the revolution? and ?achieve the hopes of the Egyptian people, including security, stability, and prosperity.? His entrance into the race has been rumored for weeks, but came just days after he announced he would not run for president. In today?s statement, he said he reversed course to "answer the call of the people."

Suleiman led Egypt?s feared intelligence service for nearly two decades until Mubarak appointed him vice president in a failed attempt to quell last year?s uprising. It was Suleiman who announced on live television that Mubarak had stepped down on Feb. 11, 2011.

During Suleiman's tenure as director of Egypt?s General Intelligence Directorate, the ardent anti-Islamist oversaw crackdowns on the Muslim Brotherhood, as well as the extraordinary rendition of suspected terrorists. Under that practice, the US sent such suspects to countries including Egypt, which tortured the suspects ? on Suleiman?s watch and allegedly sometimes at his own hands ? to extract information, and reported the information back to the US.? According to rights advocates, he is responsible for decades of abuse and torture. One suspect who the US delivered to Egypt for interrogation, Ibn Al Shaikh Al Libi, revealed, under torture, supposed Al Qaeda ties to Saddam Hussein. That information, which turned out to be false, was used to bolster the US case for war in Iraq in 2003.

For years, Suleiman was not only intelligence chief, but, as Mubarak?s trusted deputy, one of the president?s connections to the US. He often spoke with US officials. He also oversaw certain portfolios in Egypt?s foreign affairs, like Palestinian reconciliation.

Many Egyptians loathe Suleiman. And in a sign his campaign might not fare well, those who were associated with the former regime fared poorly in the parliamentary elections. Some analysts say he is unlikely to win a fair election. But some Egyptians feel that he could bring security and stability back to Egypt, which has been rocked by protests and instability in the year since the uprising.

?I will vote for Omar Suleiman if he runs,? said mechanic Mohamed Ahmed last week. ?The Brotherhood took the parliament; I don?t want them to take the presidency, too. Suleiman is experienced, and he can make Egypt stable again.?
